Intention for this presentation • Provide information about the PCSS & its relevance in this context to NPHS staff • Consider impact of investigations on the individual professional • Encourage staff to consider professionals in their health promotion/disease prevention work
The PCSS is a service for GPs, dentists & community pharmacists
Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government • Hosted by NPHS but run as an independent service • Led from Bangor University with coordinators in each of the 3 regions

The Health of Doctors - StressBMA April 2007 Main sources of work-related stress: • Excessive workloads • Organisational changes • Poor management • Mistakes, complaints and litigation
Stress in General PractitionersA Devakumar et al survey • Anxiety-related questions: 81% felt overloaded with work 38% had symptoms of burn-out • Depression-related questions: 66% slept badly and 33% had early morning waking • Suicide-related questions: 8% had suicidal thoughts
Devakumar Survey • Alcohol-related questions: 25% felt they should reduce their drinking • Medication-related questions: 25% admitted to self-prescribing PO drugs • Retirement: 56% were considering early retirement
Barriers to seeking help • Concern for livelihood • Professional training • Macho professional culture • Perception that professional competency in question if seen to be ‘ill’
What is the PCSS offering • Up to 10 counselling sessions free to the client • Peer Support • Personal development which helps individuals manage the stress (help with managing the relationship to work or workplace environment)
Proactive PCSS Approach to Providing Support • PCSS booklet • Sent to all GP & dental practices and community pharmacies • Arrangement with LHBs linked to investigations
PCSS actions (continued) • Joint letter with LMCs from LHBs • Provided booklets to other investigating type organisations or individuals Care has been taken to protect the independence of the PCSS in all these relationships
