International Residential CodeIRC 2003 Tables R301.4 and R301.5 specify a minimum concentrated live load capacity of 200 lbf for handrails and guardrails. Insert the tables into this slide.
International Building CodeIRC 2000 Section 1712.1 & 1714 specify that: - the “structural unit and connections” shall be tested with a factor of safety of 2.5.
International Building CodeIBC 2000 The published application of these safety code requirements is that: the guardrail post connection must successfully withstand a minimum applied load of 500 lbf (200 lbf X 2.5).
In wood deck construction, there are 4 basic methods used for attaching the rail post: • Rail post bolted or screwed to the rim joist • Wood blocking behind and next to the railing post • Sheet metal plates on top of the joists • Structural metal brackets that provide an attachment in shear to the deck joist
