  2. A petróleum-lámpáknak két főtípusa van, melyek különböző módon működnek: a „kanócos lámpa„ és a „pumpálós lámpa".Az első petróleum lámpát a Bagdadban élő Al-Razi írta le a 9-ik században. A petróleum lámpa modern változatát később egy lengyel feltaláló, Ignacy Tukasiewicz és az USA- beli Robert Edvin Dietz 1853-ban egymástól függetlenül fejlesztette ki. A lámpa két feltalálója közötti elsőbbség máig tisztázatlan.
