The Spill About Oil Spills By Hunter Bloom
Birds and Fish In oil • Birds and fish can easily be coated in oil after an oil spill. For birds, it might coat their wings in oil. So when they would dive down to get a fish, they might not be able to fly away. The usual result for that animal is death. • The oil affects birds because if they inhale the toxic gas they will most likely die. They could also die if their wings got coated in oil and they couldn’t warm themselves up.
<)))>< <)))>< <)))>< <)))>< <)))>< <)))>< • Birds, turtles, fish, and many other animals can be heavily coated in oil. These animals usually die because of that. • Oil can also coat sea grass beds and marshlands. In doing so, it kills the plants and poisons the animals that live near that area. Since oil contains toxic chemicals it might cause abnormal growths or prevent animals from reproducing. • As you see, oil spills cause a lot of death for the sea animals. So try your best to do something to help. At the end of this slideshow, you will be given some examples of some ways to help.
Because oil spills are so destructive, people have come up with many ways to clean them up. <)))><
HOW TO REMOVE OIL FROM THE WATER • The workers can set up booms, (floating barriers), to block the oil from spreading out. They could also spread sorbent materials , which act as an oil absorbing sponge. • The people who work on getting the oil out of the water have to contain it first.
How to control oil Skimmers and nets can also recover oil. Dispersants are chemicals that push the oil into deeper waters.
Oil spreading out • Oil can get pushed around and moved by humans too. Like I said earlier, dispersants push the oil deeper. • Oil is less dense than water, so it usually floats near the surface. Just one quart of oil can cause an oil slick of almost two acres.

Weathering can change the physical and chemical properties of the oil. • As the oil weathers, waves and currents break it into smaller pieces. They may carry the oil far away from the spill location. In addition, some oil may sink through the water and gather in sediments at the bottom
How to prevent oil spills from happening in the first place <))>< =========== <))>< ====================== • Tanker ships haul billions of gallons of crude oil. So one way we can attempt to prevent oil pollution is by making tanker ships stronger and steadier to make sure the oil will not spill.
Check your oil !! Check your oil. Check your oil. • We should make the oil containers stronger so that it would be really hard for it to break open. But sometimes oil just leaks from a pipe. It might take months before someone realizes it.
Conclusion • I hope this inspired you to go out and help out with oil spills in some way. No matter how you help, as long as you help, it will help save the marine life one step at a time. • BY: Hunter • For three ways to help, look on the next page
Three ways to help with oil spills • Purchase a bottle of Dawn and $1 will go towards the marine mammal Center and the Bird rescue and research center. • Florida is calling untrained volunteers to come help pick up trash on its beaches to reduce the impact of the spill once it hits land
One more way • The Audubon Society has launched a response to this crisis. They’ll be organizing volunteers for this wildlife rescue and beach cleanup, as well as researching the effects of the spill on habitats in the weeks and months following its landfall. • To learn more , go to http://www.restorethegulf.gov/; http://www.audubonaction.org; http://www.dawn-dish.com/us/dawn/savingwildlife
