World Music. Throughout the world there are many different styles of music. Whilst ‘Pop Music’ is often universal other styles such as African Drumming, Reggae and Latin American are less commonly heard out-with the country of its origin.

Whilst ‘Pop Music’ is often universal other styles such as African Drumming, Reggae and Latin American are less commonly heard out-with the country of its origin. World Music Music from a different country can often sound quite unusual not just because the words are in a different language but due to different scales and sounds which may be featured in the music. Indian Drumming
Caribbean Music The music of the Caribbean is easily identifiable due to the sound of the Steel Drums. Steel Bands are made up of instruments called Steel Drums or Pans. These come in various different sizes and are played by striking the drum with a form of beater/stick. The different sized ‘pans’ produce a wide range of notes and were originally made from old oil drums.

African Music The music of Africa is distinct due to the rhythms and use of tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Singing and dancing is also associated with African music. The instruments commonly used in African music are: drums, gongs, bells and types of xylophones.
African Drumming Drums play a major role in the music of Africa. The ‘talking drum’ was originally used for communication between villages. How to play the talking drum The pitch of a drum can be altered by adjusting the tightness of the straps or ropes which hold on the drumskin. Tightening the rope makes the pitch higher. Loosening the rope makes it lower.

South American Music Panpipes are the instrument most associated with South American Music. Panpipes are made from bamboo and are consist of different lengths of pipes bound together in a row or rows. By blowing over the end of each pipe a sound is produced. Latin American Music Latin American Music is a lively style of dance music from Brazil and Cuba. There are two main types of dances in Latin American music - Samba and Salsa – and both of these feature lots of percussion instruments such as drums and the guiro. A Guiro is made from wood that has been hollowed out and has ridges cut into the outer surface. A wooden stick is then dragged along the surface to produce the sound. Guiro
Spanish Music The Spanish guitar is an acoustic guitar that uses nylon strings. It is slightly smaller than a standard acoustic guitar and is popular in a style of music and dancing called Flamenco. Reggae Reggae music originated in Jamaica and developed from other types of Caribbean music. Reggae is easily identified due to the strong accents being placed on the 2nd and 4th beats of the bar. Short musical phrases called ‘Riffs’ are typically played in the bass of reggae music. Bob Marley is the musician most associated with Reggae Music.
