  1. E4 Comments • I’ve read all your E4 blog entries with great interest! • Always remember that this is your class and we care about your success! • We will do whatever we can to help but we cannot read your mind… • It’s very important at this point in the class to reflect on your progress. • Acknowledge your progress as well as understanding you have more to do • Everyone feels that they have made progress! • However levels of confidence vary greatly… • People are generally enthusiastic about programming • Often tedious and frustrating… satisfying when it works • Welcome to the club! As your skill improves so will this  • Very common to lack competence and confidence • Many people said they did not feel ready for the next phase of class • If you have been able to complete at least one in-class WOD you are ready • Sadly, you will never feel fully ready…. • The Assignments are learning tools to bring you through this next phase… • They are challenging because they confront your gaps in understanding and skill

  2. Class going to fast? • Pace is too fast • Did you know that you set the pace of the class? • If we are going too fast, say so. If I do not hear questions or requests, I have to assume you are good to go. • I do look at your work and the PickOn to try to adjust, but… • You must take responsibility for your own learning. Do not let yourself fall behind and hope to catch up later. Address your gaps and misunderstandings immediately. • No time to reflect… cannot fully absorb • You are asked to reflect frequently, however one thing often builds on another… • Programming is a skill that you cannot absorb. It must be practiced though experience. • You will never fully understand everything. However your understanding will deepen and will get better and better at understanding and applying things as your skill improves. • Things will come together at different times…

  3. More Examples • If you look you will see that most everything we do are examples. • The screencasts and corresponding presentation slides are chock full of useful examples. • If you want more examples of something in particular, ask! • More resources? • We have so many already. If you feel the resources we have are insufficient let me know where and I’ll provide more.

  4. Too Time Self-Learning • Screencasts, readings and practice WODs are your “textbook” materials. • You can use these in a variety of ways that suits you best. • Some people are not making effective use of the class structure and resources. • As with any 3 unit course, you are expected to spend 9hrs/week outside of class and you should plan for this. • There is no expectation that you learn everything on your own. • The materials are set up to learn and build your skills. • There will always be challenges which we hope to identify and overcome though class sessions • It is suggested that you be an “active” viewer of screencasts. The screencasts are your “textbook” readings. Follow along with the examples rather than just watch. Go back to the screencasts as needed. Come to class with requests for elaboration and examples. • If you are pressed for time, just go through the presentation slides and skip to the parts of the screencast where you have problems • We provide many resources and options for your learning. You will have to determine what works best for you. • ** You may always ask for “lecture” on anything you feel sketchy on from the readings

  5. Take Time to Review? • We do review things that tend to be difficult… a lot! • You may not have thought so and saw this as unnecessary or boring duplicated lecture • I always ask if anyone wants something reviewed or more examples given. Rarely does anyone ask  Take advantage if this! • Some people felt that topics are not covered enough • Ask when you feel this is the case. You can send email or just ask at the start of class. • Do not be concerned about “holding up the class” At very worst I may ask you to come for help outside of class

  6. WODs • Most people said the WODs have been valuable • Note that many are directly useful for the assignments. • Even if you DNF, helpful to go though again to complete • I may offer extra credit for doing this

  7. Getting Help • TA support • Several people mentioned how helpful the TA’s are and would like more TA support • I agree! But they have limited time • We tried to get more TA’s and more time…  • Unfortunately we will have to make do with what we have • I am always available for you • Maybe uncomfortable, but very helpful… • If you “sit” with me to work on your assignment you will learn a lot • ITMA club is usually happy to help • You should pay attention to my advice and warnings! They are meant solely for your benefit. Not just flapping my gums… • Next class I will present “Port’s Principles” of helpful advice I’ve collected over the many years teaching this class • Avoid taking shortcuts (such as copying someone else's work) • Generally this will cause more problems and require more effort later
