The Response to Marie and Louis • French Revolutionary leaders get wind of Louis’ attempt to put down the revolt • Declare war on Austria and Prussia in 1792 • Goal is to expand France and get rid of monarchies everywhere • Louis and Marie are executed in public by the guillotine
A New Dictatorship Emerges • Committee of Public Safety • Meant to direct war effort • Imposes a draft for all men ages 18-45 to serve in military • People start to grow skeptical of new government • Political and economic crises begin
Robespierre, the Unofficial Absolute Monarch • Reign of Terror begins with Robespierre at the helm • Mean to crush all opponents (Royalists) • Harsh sentences passed quickly (executions) • Ruled by Committee of Public Safety (Jacobins/Robespierre) • The Good Side of The Terror • Opens new schools, promotes education • Abolishes slavery • Tries to help economy and agriculture
The Directory • Robespierre is finished • July 28th 1794 executed • Directory is established • Draft a new Constitution • Ends universal male suffrage • Controlled by Wealthy middle class • Problems for the Directory • Foreign wars were creating debt • Severe food shortages • France’s army was weak from fighting • Royalists and sans-culottes wanted to take over
