  5. Causes of the Reign of Terror The Need for the Reign of Terror • Lasted from September 1793 till fall of Robespierre in 1794 • “It purpose was to purge France of enemies of the Revolution and protect the country from foreign invaders” (mtholyoke.com)

  6. Causes of Reign of Terror cont. Area of Strongest Resistance (Vendee Civil War) • “The Vendee and Brittany were in revolt, and food supplies, always short, were hearing famine level” (Dowd 104). • Vendee took place in 1793

  7. Causes of the Reign of Terror cont. • The war started because Vendee had a backward religion and economy and so many different religions and wanted to change it. • Others think the war started because the king got killed and someone new had to come and take power.

Terror Laws Surveillance committees enforced Laws of Suspects • Law of Suspects passed on September 17, 1793 • Allowed government to put people in jail without questioning them in court. • This feared a lot of people and more people went to the guillotine, many crimes were committed, lots of people were arrested.

  9. Terror Laws cont. The Law of Prairal • Law of Prairal came to affected on July 10, 1794 • Allowed courts to call people guilty with even hearing any evidence.
