DOE/NGI Testbed Sites ESnet Abilene MREN
Planned DOE/NGI Testbed Capabilities • Allocate bandwidth out of production ESnet service (30% of access link; 45-90 Mbps per site) • MREN sites determine bandwidth allocation • Testbed will carry Best Effort + Premium traffic • Resource control/allocation/scheduling • Provide instrumentation assistance for applications to drive toward adaptive applications
DOE/NGI Testbed Implementation • Site/edge routers will mark Premium Service flows • Sites will ensure Premium Service to end systems • ESnet & Abilene routers will police at ingress • ESnet & Abilene will set PHB as needed • Goal to ease manual configuration burden • Goal persistent testbed infrastructure
L2 Infrastructure Full PVC mesh Bandwidth ? 8 sites require 28 p2p links
L3 Infrastructure • ANL Class C • point-to-point subinterfaces • using ip unnumbered • use /32 subnet • 255.255.255.240 • static routing between sites • ANL 140.221.48/24
Software • Globus • GARA • Cisco IOS 12.05T == 12.05XE • rsp-pv-mz.091099 • rsp-pv-mz.100399. This image will be officially released as 12.0(5)XE2 • test tools • need Web-based mechanisms for monitoring testbed status e.g., active reservations
Schedule • ANL up • NWU router up; Globus/GARA (Alain) • UIC router (11/1); Globus/GARA ? • UIUC/NCSA router ordered; Globus/GARA ? • UOC router in (11/1); Globus/GARA ? • WISC router in (10/21); Globus/GARA ? • ESnet router ?; Globus/GARA ? • Abilene router ?; Globus/GARA ?
Testing • Test machine + accounts for network engineers (Linux RH6.0) • Baseline end-to-end BE performance • Single stream end-to-end Premium service • Multiple stream end-to-end Premium service

Measurement • Measure end-to-end paths • Logging at each site • gatekeeper • gara • diffsrv mgr • slot table • syslog capability would be helpful • Access to router snmp statistics • looking glass • http? • Coordination
Action • Mailing list (emerge-tech@nsg.nwu.edu) • Jon Dugan will maintain Linux tool repository • Jon Dugan will maintain Cisco image repository • All sites need to provide Linux (RH6.0) test box • CoralReef to be ordered by EVL, NCSA, WIS
