  2. Huazhong University of Science and Technology, located in the central of China, was founded in 1953, and ranks the TOP 10 universities in China.

  3. Topic • How graduate students are recruited, trained, and placed in positions

Questions • What criteria are used to recruit students? • What requirements are there for the differentgraduate degrees? • What faculty members are involved in the recruitment and the training? • What is the current and potential future job marketfor students with graduate degrees in computer science? • How do faculty assist with placement? • Is there a role for US-Chinese collaborationsin this area?

  6. What criteria are used to recruit students? • University ranking and major (985, 211,…) • Research experience and potential (awards in various contest) • Programming ability (programming test) • English (Level 6 or 4) • Other certificates

What requirements are there for the different graduate degrees? • For master students • Research project/system prototype deployment • Draft a technical report/publish a paper • A thesis and a demo during oral defense • For Ph.D students • Research project/innovation • Publish high quality papers • University level: 1 level B journal/2 level C journals • Lab level: 3(conference papers)+2(journal papers, 1B+1C)

What faculty members are involved in the recruitment and the training? • For master students • All faculty members with Ph.D degree or with associated professor title can be supervisor • 4 for each professor, and 2 for others • For Ph.D students • Only Ph.D supervisor (part of professors) can supervise Ph.D students • Others may supervise Ph.D students only being as assistant supervisor • Each Ph.D student has 4 professors forming a supervising group

What is the current and potential future job market for students with graduate degrees in computer science? • Job market for CS graduate students varies with universities • For master students, very good job market, starting salary from 5K RMB per month to 20K RMB per month • Majority go to industry, but still some go to government • Some go abroad, very small amount continue Ph.D degree • For Ph.D students, varies also • My case: 21 graduate total, 16 to university, 2 to industry, 1 to research institute, 2 to government • 3 go abroad as postdoc

  10. How do faculty assist with placement? • Industry collaboration/joint lab • Research influence • Project background • Faculty academic/industry influence • Recommendation

  11. Is there a role for US-Chinese collaborations in this area? • Promote students/faculty exchange to improve student training quality and foster research ability • Recommend students/faculty members • Collaborate with Chinese government 5000 exchange program • Creative program: dual Ph.D program
