  1. Registration and Student Placement Pete Gaynor, Acting Chief Operations Officer Dr. Jose Gonzalez, Director of Student Placement Bernie Luger, III, Operations Management Intern to the Chief of Staff

  2. Purpose • To update the Providence School Board and the public about current status of registration, recent improvements and short-term projections. 2

  3. Agenda • Projected Enrollment • Improvements • Modernization • Policy Changes • Questions 3

  4. Projected Enrollment As enrollment increases over the next 10 years by over 1000 students, we will be challenged to find adequate classroom space. 4

  5. Improvements 5

  6. Kindergarten Registration • We wanted a robust, transparent process that parents could trust. • We met with our Oversight Committee to get input about what we could do better. • We made changes: • We hosted eight kindergarten registration seminars. • We offered the Achievement First Mayoral Academy on our own choice forms. • We increased transparency. 6

  7. Kindergarten Registration • The results of our efforts were encouraging: • We had 200 more families register this year than last year. • That’s 200 more families that were able to exercise choice about where their student would attend school. 7

  8. Kindergarten Registration • 75% of our families who registered on time got their first choice school. • 95%+ of our families got one of their four choices. 8

  9. Modernization 9

  10. Modernization • Our Vision • We want a “one-stop shop” where families can do all of their school business. • Registration • Food Service • Special Education • English Language Learners • We want modern technology to help us provide a higher level of service to our families. 10

  11. Modernization • What Has Happened • New Web Portal for School Assignments • What’s Going to Happen Soon • New Student Information System is coming • New Phones are on the Way • What We Are Planning • Computerizing the registration process • Moving to scanned documents 11

  12. Policy Changes 12

  13. Policy Changes • We have been working with the Oversight Committee to look at changes in the way we do business. • We want to be more responsive to families’ needs. • We want families to have quality school choices regardless of their zip code. • We want to evaluate students’ needs and place them in appropriate programming before the student enters the school system. 13

  14. Policy Changes We continue to work with the Oversight Committee and expect to have policy change recommendations by the end of summer. 14
