University of Chichester Archives • Currently occupies three rooms for research and storage • We welcome members of the public/outside researchers by appointment • We work with external bodies such as Heritage Open Days/local societies/schools • Support the academic departments, alumni and postgraduate researchers • Work closely with the history department on several modules

  3. Local History and our Archives • The University has a good historical Archive covering its own development. Documents include architectural plans, photographic records, minutes etc. • The Gerard Young Collection: a resource of historical material relating to all aspects of Sussex History • Local History Collection – established to support the Gerard Young Collection • A comprehensive collection of Sussex Archaeological Society/Sussex Record Society/Local History Society papers are held in the archives

  4. A Module Supported by the Archives

Module Rational • The student gains an understanding of the practical, ethical & technical issues involved in the collection and preservation of primary materials • Working with professionals gives an understanding of day-to-day administrative duties, issues of interpretation, and overall responsibilities within the working environment • The student contributes to the overall objectives of the placement site in completing a particular task

Objectives By the end of the module students should be able to: • Demonstrate an understanding of the practical and ethical issues involved in museum and heritage practice • Provide a critical evaluation of professional working practices involved in the collection, cataloguing, preservation and interpretation of historical records and artefacts • Understand the application and uses of history as a discipline in relation to the work environment • Demonstrate a level of professionalism in undertaking tasks allocated to them within the workplace • Demonstrate a range of identifiable generic and history-related transferable skills

  7. Placements that have been offered • Placements in the past have included • Chichester Cathedral • Mass-Observation Archive • Tangmere Aviation Museum • Southampton Oral History Unit; West Sussex Record Office • Royal Military Police Museum • Fishbourne Roman Palace

Proposals undertaken for the University Archives • Research into the life of the 3rd Earl of Aran – Arthur Saunders Gore, also known as Viscount Sudley. • To prepare exhibition boards for the Old Student Reunion of ‘Bognor Regis Training College’. • Find out about the life of Lord George Lennox • Trace the history of the Bognor Regis Campus at the time of the Second World War.

Module Assessment • The student is required to keep a Journal/Logbook • Formative Assessment: based on intrimprogress report/tutorial with the Module Co-ordinator and discussions around the journal • Summative Assignment: 3500 word essay/report on your work placement experience/plus the completed journal

  13. Benefits to the Archives • Allows some research to be done on projects that otherwise could not be timetabled in • Raises the awareness of the University Archives • Raises staff/department awareness of our history and role • Filling an academic function

Other Local History related Modules supported by the archives Spaces and Places: Reading Landscape and Localities • demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between community and its physical environment • demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the ways in which social, cultural and economic developments have affected urban and rural topography • demonstrate practical skills of landscape assessment. • appreciate the long term history of local landscapes and settlements in their wider national context

Looking ahead • Currently working with our Careers Department to offer archive work placements to undergraduate student leavers as a work experience platform • Working with our Postgraduate/Research Department to investigate ways our collections can support placements • New Research Room planned for the Chichester Learning Resource Centre to support new collections • Any questions?
