Working with parents to ensure young children are in the best possible position to start learning in a setting. • The programme will support the development of parental mathematical skills through the delivery of ‘activities to do with your child’. This will have the joint impact of developing parental mathematical ability and improving the capacity for young children to access the numeracy strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
The programme will support the development of parental literacy and English skills through the delivery of ‘activities to do with your child’. • This will have the joint impact of developing parental literacy and English ability and improving the capacity for young children to access the literacy strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
Length of Course between 12 and 20 hrs Guided Learning Hours. Course Aims The Starter for Ten is a parenting programme designed to promote preschool children’s school readiness and support parents/guardians in helping their children learn and develop. At the end of the programme children will have successfully completed the 10-step checklist to help prepare them for starting school:
1. To be able to listen, talk and communicate effectively with adults and children • 2. To be able to make friends and play with other children • 3. To understand the word ‘no’ and the boundaries it sets for behaviour • 4. To understand the word ‘stop’ and that such a phrase might be used to prevent danger • 5. To recognise their own name in print
6. To show an awareness and an interest in numbers and the number system • 7. To be aware of their own toileting needs • 8. To be able to take off their coat and put on shoes • 9. To encourage and discover learning through play • 10.To share and enjoy a book
