5 Types of Fashion Retailers • Department stores (Macy’s) • Discount stores (Wal-Mart) • Off-price stores (T.J. Maxx) • Chain stores (The Limited) • Boutiques (Foxy Lady)
Work with a Partner • Create a definition for each of the 5 types of fashion retailers • What makes each one unique? • Share with the class
Different Styles • Classic – traditional; long life cycle • Trendy – most current style • Young Designer – brand new designers; usually very creative • Designer – high quality; high fashion • Couture– original; one-of-a-kind garments; highest quality
Classifying a Collection • Sportswear – worn for work or play; casual; for men can include sportcoats or jeans; uniquely American; doesn’t refer to garments worn while participating in sports
Activewear • Apparel worn while taking an active part in a sport
Careerwear or Business Attire • Traditional workplace clothing
Eveningwear • Special occasion or formal wear; including cocktail and prom • Elegant and formal
Wedding Apparel • Includes wedding gowns; • Mother-of-the-bride dresses • Bridesmaid dresses • Rarely worn more than once & are not appropriate for other events
