Background • Main cropping systems include cereal-legume intercropping and also sole cropping of legumes increasingly. • Millet/sorghum-cowpea in Sahel • Sorghum/maize – cowpea/groundnut in Sudan Savanna • Maize – groundnuts in Guinea Savanna • Savannas are crop-livestock systems - The relative importance of crops increases as one moves from north (Sahel) to south (Guinea Savannas)

  5. WA sites • Fakara – Western Niger • 8 villages • Koure and Diantiandou • Goulbi – Eastern Niger • Madarounfa and Guidan Roumdji • 8 villages • Kano area – Northern Nigeria • Wudil and Garko • 8 villages

  6. Recent trends • Breakdown of soil fertility maintenance system • Increase droughts lead to reduction in total • biomass production • Crop residues main source of feed during the dry • season • Development of important markets for legume • residues
