  1. Ullswater 2014 Year 5 - 17th-21st March

  2. The plan… • Open to all of year 5 and we hope the vast majority will be able to attend. • 4 nights, 5 days - Outward Bounds, at Ullswater in the Lake District (the closest Outward Bounds centre) • A bespoke ‘first challenge’ program, planned in conjunction with school to build on and develop prior experiences. • Also forms part of our ‘The Lakes’ theme which we will be exploring during the half term of the visit.

  3. Why? • Develop learning independence , confidence and team work skills. • Appreciation, enjoyment and immersion in the natural environment. • A real and purposeful learning experience- building upon the activity based Kingswood visit (but attendance at Kingswood not needed!) • Once in a lifetime experience, developing transferable skills. • Forms a central part of the PSHE curriculum.  • Pupils benefit immensely from residential trips - both socially and educationally.  • Links into our theme work.

  4. The Program (1) • A bespoke ‘first challenge’ program. • Designed to build upon and develop previous experiences. • Mixture of adventure and challenge activities such as:- • Low and high ropes, including team challenges • Rock climbing and abseiling • Team work and challenge/problem solving activities • Water based activities- raft building, dragon boat racing, canoeing etc… • Gorge walking and river exploration • Expeditions (in a day) and environmental activities

  5. The Program (2) • Using the natural environment where possible- an immersive experience. • Built in time for reflection • Designed to be as FUN as possible. • Evening activities- most of which are also adventure/challenge based and form an integral part of the program. • Program designed with the school to ensure it delivers the best outcomes for the children. • Depending on the design of the final program, likelihood of the internationally recognised John Muir award being awarded to each child.

  6. Outward Bounds… • UK’s first and leading outdoor education charity. • Providing a real educational offering - a substantial learning opportunity - not just a set of activities. • Welcome over 300,000 young people to their centres each year - approx 40% of their groups are aged 8-11. • Unrivalled safety record • A supportive, safe and challenging environment to help children realise their true potential. • Provide all equipment and specialist clothing. • A real synergy between the aims of Outward Bounds and the Academy’s aims for the visit

  7. Outward Bounds provides measured outcomes… • In independent research of children who experienced an Outward Bounds Course found that over 93% of participants developed greater confidence, resilience and optimism. • Children were also reported to have shown an increase in their learning confidence, independence and capability in the classroom. • Classes bond closer together and function even better as learning teams. • Children also develop a real appreciation and synergy with the natural environment • Schools consistently report an increase in academic attainment.

  8. The instructors • All have considerable experience. • 90% have a degree level qualification in education, outdoor education or adventure activities. • Over half are qualified teachers (have PGCE’s) • Average age of 32. • One main instructor per group of 10-12- allowing them to build up a great relationship with the group and drive forward the learning and development of the group. • Instructors supported by school staff during the day, and Outward Bounds are unique in providing pastoral support to school staff during the evenings/night.

  9. The centre and accommodation… • Situated on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District a breathtakingly beautiful location. • Grade 2 listed building with substantial wooded grounds. • Secure, DBS check only, site. • We will be the main occupants of the centre during our visit. • Rooms of 4-10 people, either en-suite or with toilets and showers very close by. • Full kitchen and dining room, serving hearty food to keep children energised and ready for their adventures!

  10. The cost… The ‘list price’ for the experience is.. £432 But… We have been fortunate to receive a charitable subsidy worth £50 per child. We have also been granted a bursary from the Outward Bounds Trust wroth £91 per child.

  11. The cost (2) The total cost is dependent on the number of children attending, but will be no more than £290 (£58 per day) This figure is likely to reduce. This is very reasonable in comparison to other options, including PGL and Kingswood.

  12. What’s included • Full board - all meals from dinner on Monday to lunch on Friday • All activities • A dedicated instructor • All specialist equipment, including waterproofs and wellies! • Insurance, including personal possessions and cancellation. • Transport

  13. Payment options We are asking for deposit of £35 either tonight, or as soon as possible and no later than the 22nd July. This deposit is non-refundable. Then pay as you are able, meeting the payment milestones:-
