Part 1: Public Speaking Credit where credit is due: From an article by Morton C. Orman M.D.
Where we are going… • 10 Principles for conquering anxieties • 11 “Hidden” causes of stress
Principle #1 • Public Speaking is not “inherently” stressful
Principle #2 • You don’t have to be brilliant or perfect to excel
Principle #3 • All you need is two or three key points
Too much is too much! Today’s topic: • Semiotic Modeling of Dialectic Modalities in Low-Density Modern Sino-Asiatic Tongues…
The Golden Rule K.I.S.S. • Keep • It • Simple • Son* * The word that normally appears here is “Stupid”, but this is DeMolay after all…
Principle #4 • Remember your Purpose
Principle #5 • The best way to excel in front of an audience is NOT to consider yourself to be very good at it…
Principle #6 • Humility and Humor can go a long way
Principle #7 • Nothing “Bad” can happen
What if….? SO WHAT!!!
Principle #8 • You don’t have to control your Audience
Principle #9 • Don’t Overprepare!
Principle #10 • Your Audience sincerely wants you to do well
Thinking that Public Speaking is “inherently" stressful (it’s not!) Thinking you need to be Brilliant or Perfect Trying to put out too much information Having the wrong goal in mind Trying to please everyone (unrealistic) Trying to be someone you’re not rather than just being yourself Failing to be humble Being fearful of “bad” things happening Trying to control the wrong things (audience) Over-preparing Thinking the Audience will be too critical 11 “Hidden” causes for stress in public speaking situations
Public Speaking is not stressful You don’t have to be brilliant or perfect All you need is two or three key points Remember your purpose Don’t believe you are what you aren’t Humility and Humor can go a long way Nothing “Bad” can happen Control the things you can Don’t Over-prepare Your Audience sincerely wants you to do well The 10 Principles
Now that you are relatively comfortable and confident… Let’s put it into a DeMolay context
Part 2: Four elements of excellent ritual This section is all original material and concepts…
Element #1: The Meaning • Know the meaning of ALL the words • Know what message is being conveyed • In the DeMolay Degree, know the motivations of the characters
Element #2: The Words • Learn the words EXACTLY • Pronounce the words precisely • Practice, and practice again
Hand in Hand • Those first two elements need to be 100% before you should attempt to forge ahead with the last two elements
Element #3: Interpretation • Work the emphasis • Work the intonation • Work the pacing
Element #4: Confidence of Delivery • Run it again and again, with all the other elements in place, until you are dreaming it every night, and it becomes absolutely automatic • PLAN FOR CONTINGENCIES!
Remember! • Remember your purpose, as we discussed in Part 1. GIVE not get. Even if you are in competition.
The four elements are: • Know the Meaning • Know the Words • Perfect your Interpretation • Gain Confidence of Delivery
Final Summary • Public Speaking can be fun and easy
