Essential Questions How does the reporter know what the weather will be tomorrow? How can I use weather instruments to predict weather? What types of instruments are used to predict weather?
Did you know… • Meteorologists, or weather scientists, use many different instruments to gather data about weather. • These instruments collect data on temperature, precipitation, wind, air pressure, and more. • Weather instruments help make weather predictions.
What are the instruments you ask… • Thermometer • Rain gauge • Weather vane • Anemometer • Barometer
Thermometer • A thermometer tells how hot or cold the air is. This is how a meteorologist measures temperature. • There are several different kinds of thermometers the most common has a liquid inside a thin glass tube. The liquid expands when it gets warmer and contracts when it gets cooler. As it expands and contracts, it moves up and down the tube which in turn shows the temperature of the air.
How can you measure precipitation? A Rain Gauge of course. This can measure the amount of rain fall. This tool is a can or tube with an opening at the top. Rain falls into the rain gauge. A scale on the side measures how much rain has collected in it. A ruler is a good tool to measure snow. Scientist stick the ruler straight down into the snow. They are able to see how many inches of snow has fallen.
What weather tools describe the two properties of wind? • A weather vane tells the direction from which the wind comes. You can sometimes see weather vanes on the roofs of houses or barns. The weather vane spins freely in the wind, the front of the weather vane points in the direction of the wind.
How can you measure how fast wind blows? An anemometer tells how fast the wind blows. This tools has several arms that stick out. Each are has a cup at its end. Wind blows into the cup and spins the anemometer. The tool measures the force of the wind pushing against it. The stronger the wind=the faster it spins
How can you measure air pressure? Well…what is air pressure you ask??? Air pressure is the pressure a column on air above a certain location exerts of Earth’s surface. It is an important tool in weather prediction…it tells meteorologists if the weather will be fair or stormy. Low air pressure = Stormy weather High air pressure = Fair weather
So how is air pressure measured? It is measured using a barometer. So what happens when the weather is fair and the readings are dropping? Storms are on the way…
Which instrument measures air pressure? • Thermometer • Anemometer • Barometer • Hygrometer
Scientists can measure wind speed with a… • Weather vane • Hygrometer • Thermometer • Anemometer
A weather van shows the direction from which the wind blows by… • Spinning around and around. • Pointing in the direction of the wind. • Pointing away from the direction of the wind. • Pointing straight upward.
What does a rain gauge do? • Analyzes chemicals in rain. • Measures how fast rain falls. • Measures the amount of rain that falls. • Determines the size of rain drops.
What will the air pressure be like on a fair day? • Low • High • Dropping • Rising
