Setting • Chapter 1 – Into the Primitive • Fall of 1897
Selected Characters PROTAGONIST ANTAGONIST BUCK – Powerful Dog Manuel – Gardener's helperfor Judge Miller
Tone – Nostalgic to Serious • Nostalgic- words talking about the past in a better light: old days, quiet, gently, antique, personable, better back then • Serious- the tone is very staid and strong; no humor evident • The tome that Jack London used for this chapter is nostalgic at first, but then changes in to being very serious tone towards the ending. • Chapter 1 Quote: • Jack London shows how Buck handles the club. “He was the beaten (he knew that); but he was not broken.” • Jack London describes the calmness and peace in Buck’s life. “On wintry nights he lay at the Judge’s feet before the roaring library fire.”
Plot Summary • Buck had to leave his friends at the ranch behind after he was stolen by Manuel. He left behind a comfortable and pampered life on the judges estate. He had never been treated cruelly and was in great surprise when his journey began in the wild.
