Learning Web 2007June 12 Learning web teams will plan and implement a project that integrates the research of Dr. Robert Marzano with instructional technology, and keeps students at the center.
Agenda • Welcome and introductions • The Essential Nine • What is a successful project? • Research Walking Tour • What did we learn?
The Essential Nine Classroom Instruction that WorksRobert Marzano, McREL • Identifying Similarities and Differences • Summarizing and Note Taking • Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition • Home Work and Practice • Non Linguistic Representations • Cooperative Learning • Setting Goals and Providing feedback • Generating and Testing Hypotheses • Activating Prior Knowledge • Teaching Specific Types of Knowledge
Academic Gains for StudentsWhat the Research Shows Average Effect Size Percentile Gain Identifying Similarities and Differences 1.61 45 Summarizing and Note Taking 1.00 34 0.80 29 Reinforcing Effort Providing Recognition Home Work and Practice 0.77 28 Non Linguistic Representations 27 0.75 0.73 27 Cooperative Learning 0.61 23 Setting Goals and Providing Feedback 0.61 23 Generating and Testing Hypotheses Activating Prior Knowledge 0.59 22
The Essential Nine: Pairs Read • Work in pairs. One partner is “A” the other is “B”. • Partner “A” reads aloud the first 2 sections. • Partner “B” summarizes in 30 seconds or less. • Partner “B” reads aloud the next 2 sections; partner “A” summarizes. • Continue to switch roles. Finish the text.
Planning for Student Learning • What knowledge and skills will students be learning? • Setting Goals • Cues, Questions and Advance Organizers • Reinforcing Effort • How will students acquire and integrate skills and knowledge? • Note Taking • Nonlinguistic Representations • Similarities and Differences • Cooperative Learning • What will be done to help student practice, review and apply the knowledge and skills? • Homework and Practice • Generating and Testing Hypotheses (self and peer assessment) • How will you know if students have learned the new knowledge and skills? • Summarizing • Providing Feedback • Providing Recognition

Research Walking Tour • Select a cut-out from the center of your table. • Move to the designated chart. Introduce yourselves; this will be your “touring group”. • Read and discuss. • Every 10 minutes, you will be chimed to move to a new chart.
Take 2 Take 2 minutes to process your research walking tour notes/discussions with your team and facilitator.
