Introduction Thank you Community of Practice (def): Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly* Objectives of the PM CoP Bring those interested in PM together in a forum to share information and knowledge Discuss PM challenges and new techniques Coordinate PM activities All to increase PM capabilities in HRS *Wenger, McDermott, & Snyder. Elements of Project Management* Project – A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result; duration is finite; undertaken to create a lasting outcome Project Management – The application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements Project Manager – The person responsible for accomplishing project objectives Project Management Processes Initiating Planning Executing Monitoring and Controlling Closing *Taken directly from A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), Third Edition
Elements of Project Management* (cont) Project Management Knowledge Areas Integration Management – to coordinate other processes Scope Management – to define and control what is and is not included in the project Time Management – to accomplish timely project completion Cost (or Budget) Management– to ensure that the project is completed on budget Quality Management– to ensure that project satisfies the needs for which it was undertaken HR Management– to organize and manage the project team Communications Management– to ensure the timely and appropriate generation, distribution, storage and retrieval of project information Risk Management– to increase the probability of positive events and decrease the probability of adverse events Procurement Management– To purchase or acquire necessary resources outside of the project team *Taken directly from A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), Third Edition
