  3. What is SUCCEED? Summer Center for Climate, Energy, and Environmental Decision Making • August 1-5 • Students entering 10th grade • Target population: students who are unclear if they want to remain in STEM

  4. We targeted underprivileged students who were unsure if they wanted to remain in STEM "SUCCEED is a free program open to all students entering 10th grade in Fall 2011. We appreciate your assistance in targeting students who a) are unclear whether they want to stay in math/sciences for a career, and b) are unlikely to be presented with other similar opportunities." • Accepted Students: 20 • Women: 15 • Minority: 5 • Unique Schools: 13 Allderdice, Carlynton High, Carrick, Chartiers Valley, City Charter, Fox Chapel, Mt Lebanon High School, PA Cybercharter, Penn Hills, Peters Township, PPS Science and Technology Academy, Serra Catholic, Horizon Middle School

  5. Curriculum answers a variety of questions on mitigation, adapting, and dealing with unexpected impacts What is the role of engineering to solve the climate change challenge? How much do we consume, and how does this relate to electricity? How does a power plant work? What careers could you have? What can you do to mitigate the impacts of climate change? Where & how is electricity generated? What new building designs can be done? Why is policy needed?

  6. EPP PhD students are writing student centered lessons that fill gaps in knowledge and correct misconceptions Lessons are technically accurate and understandable Activities include afternoon field trips Differentiated instruction may be created

Curriculum will be reviewed by K-12 science teachers in the SUCCEED Teacher Workshop June 20-21 • Age of Participants: 42-54 • Women: 6 • Grades Taught: 9th-12th (7 participants) , 5th (2 participants) • Unique Schools: 9 Rostraver Elem BVA School Dist, Mt. Lebanon High School, Canon McMillan, Penn Hills Senior High School, PA Distance Learning Charter School, Peters Township High School, Wilmington Area School District, Shady Side Academy, Butler Area School District

  9. Tuesday, 8/2, we will discuss current power generation Coal power Shira Horowitz, Pete Versteeg Bruce Mansfield field trip

  10. Wednesday, 8/3, we will learn how the environment is harmed and how to decrease this harm Chemistry Tim Gordon CCS Justin Glier Energy Efficiency Huimin Tan, Mili-Ann Tamayao, Kyle Siler-Evans Intelligent Workplace, Solar Decathlon House

  11. Thursday, 8/4, we will learn about other ways to make and store energy Renewable energy Brandon Mauch, Allison Weiss Batteries Eric Hittinger Electric Vehicle Lab, Faculty battery factory

  12. Friday, 8/5, we will learn about the importance of policy Nuclear Ahmed Abdulla Marcellus Shale Austin Mitchell Understanding Electricity Tradeoffs Lauren Fleishman

The summer school will wrap up with a debate on topics discussed throughout the week, led by Alan Jenn • There will be 3 to 4 debates that will be approximately 25 to 30 minutes in length • Each debate will be between 2 groups of 2 to 3 students consisting of an “affirmative” and “negative” group • A panel of 3 judges will also act as arbiters for timing purposes
