Personal and Professional Values As individuals: • Consider what your own personal values are – try and write down up to 6 of your values • Next, consider how these personal values might influence your professional values As a small group: • Discuss your values in relation to the Professional Attributes section of the TDA Standards for QTS • Each group should aim to feedback 1 key point from their discussions to the whole group • Prepare a statement of 500 words on your personal values to bring with you on 19th September

QTS Standards Professional Attributes: Emphasis on trainee taking increasing responsibility for their own professional development and being open to coaching and mentoring
Professional Knowledge and Understanding: Emphasis on developing subject knowledge and teaching and learning strategies
Professional Skills: Emphasis on developing the necessary skills to plan, teach and assess effectively and work collaboratively with others
Skills tests • Passing all three tests successfully (numeracy, literacy, ICT), is a requirement before a trainee can be recommended for QTS • You can retake these. TDA figures show a handful of people had to sit them several times • Online support for skills tests can be found on TDA website www.TDA.gov.uk • Support materials available in the library
Structure of the course • 60 University days – Professional Studies and subject studies • University work includes tutor contact time, Supported Open Learning, independent study and reading • 120 days spent in school placements • Two end points to the course: Graduate Diploma and PGCE (all heading for PGCE!)
School Placements • 120 School days • Two block experiences in Secondary Schools and Diversity week • Involves structured observations and an increasing responsibility for lessons • Two mentors in school - PS and Subject • Training continues on school placement • Trainee has professional responsibility (and there is also the primary placement which contributes to the 120 days)
Dates of secondary school placements • SE2 – 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 14th Oct preliminary visits • SE2 Placement – 31st Oct to 9th Dec. • Diversity week - 16th to 20th Jan. • SE3 – 6th Feb preliminary week visit. • SE3 Placement – 27th Feb – 22nd June if all goes well!
Organised by Steering Group – no of criteria used not primarily geography Have to be prepared to travel Criteria for placing trainees
Steering Group • Chair – local Headteacher • School representatives from 7 schools • Education Advisor from the Diocese of York • YSJ – Dean, HoP, Subect tutor, Partnership Development Managers, School Partnership Office
Support during Placements • Two mentors in school • Training continues on school placement • Regular mentor meetings. • Trainee profile to complete • RE and Professional Studies school checklists • Quality Assurance Appraisal visit by university
Documentation • Trainee has professional responsibility for documentation and sending completed documentation to university
Trainee Profile • This is a record and evidence of progress towards standards • It is supplemented by the ICT audit and subject audit • Handbook which accompanies QTS standards • Website www.TDA.gov.uk/qualifyingtoteach
Attendance requirements • Legal requirement to complete 180 days • Attendance Record – see section 3 of course documentation folder • Importance of communication – Section 2 ‘General Programme guidelines and regulations’
Assignments • Part of evidence of meeting standards • Professional development • Practical emphasis • Assignment details and procedures are in the course documentation folder • Essential reading
The NQT • Placement ends – 22nd June if all goes well! • Legal attendance requirements must be met
