Field Advocate Program – The What The FAP recruits, trains, educates, organizes and supports a team of advocates who will: • Help educate public officials about policies affecting suicide and suicide prevention. • Build ongoing relationships with those public officials and their staff and other community leaders. • Promote AFSP policies and priorities approved through the AFSP Public Policy Council and Board of Directors. Field Advocate Program – The What • To understand and support AFSP's overall mission. • To be familiar with the AFSP public policy priorities, website and supplemental materials provided to support advocacy efforts. • To maintain contact with other Field Advocates in your state and across the country by keeping current contact information on the internal AFSP directory. Field Advocate Program – The Why • Advance the cause of suicide prevention, education and research and availability of quality mental health services through advocacy outreach and legislative action locally and nationally. • Initiate and develop important community relationships through advocacy. Field Advocate Program – The How/Recruiting • Use existing volunteers. • Attend health fairs, community events, OOTD walks, college campuses, lectures, town halls, public hearings, rallies, fundraisers and online dialogue/social media. • Maintain and regularly update a Chapter newsletter. • Promote your own local advocacy forum. Field Advocate Program – The How • Engage and encourage civic leaders and community members to participate in and support AFSP Chapter activities and affiliated organizations. • Understand AFSP's National public policy priorities for the state and local levels while recognizing and understanding your local needs. • Work with other Chapters in your state to promote or modify suicide prevention and mental health legislation.
