Invention: Crayola Crayons • Crayola brand crayons were the first kids crayons ever made. • The Crayola crayon boxes were sold for just a nickel. • The name Crayola means “oily chalk.” • In 1972, fluorescent colors were added to meet popular demand. • in 1987 Crayola washable markers and colored pencils were introduced and were an instant hit with kids, moms, and teachers.
Inventor: Edward Binney and Harold Smith • Edward and Harold founded the Binney And Smith Inc. in the late 1800’s • They specialized in industrial colorings. • Later they began to make slate pencils for students. • Edward and Harold won a gold medal at the St. Louis world Exhibition in 1902 for their invention of the first dustless chalk. • Binney and Smith used a combination of paraffin wax and industrial pigments to create crayons that were kid friendly.
