  2. Down Syndrome • Also known as trisomy 21

  3. Cause and Transmission • Most cases of Down syndrome are not inherited. When the condition is caused by trisomy 21, the chromosomal abnormality occurs as a random event during the formation of reproductive cells in a parent. 

  4. The Target Population Most of the time, Down syndrome isn't inherited. It's caused by a mistake in cell division during the development of the egg, sperm or embryo, so there is no target population, but Mothers who become pregnant after the age of 35 have a higher chance of their child getting Down Syndrome.

  5. Where and How it affects the CNS/PNS   Severe complications that affect the central nervous system are, convulsions, heart complications, and movement disorders that hinder gross and fine motor skills.

  6. Symptoms • Short stature • Weak muscles • Heart defects • Thyroid problems • Seizure disorders • Mental retardation • Immune system problems

  7. Prognosis  A child with Down’s syndrome is at high risk of death during the first year of life. According to estimates, about 15% of children with Down’s syndrome die in the first year as a result of complication that arises from congenital heart disease. The prognosis improves dramatically after infancy. Currently the average life expectancy for a person with Down’s syndrome is about 50 years.

  8. Treatment There is no cure for Down Syndrome, but some of the treatments are speech, physical and occupational therapy.

  9. Notable Case Chris Burke, American actor who portrayed "Corky Thatcher" on the television series Life Goes On and "Taylor" on Touched by an Angel.

  10. Celebrity spokesman • Nicole Sherzinger, the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, has plans to start a music camp for people with special needs. She has an aunt with Down syndrome who she grew up with.
