  2. Objectives • Identify the rationale for why we have key developmental indicators (KDIs) • Identify how KDIs are used • Classify children’s actions and words into KDI categories

  3. Your Curriculum Content • In table groups, identify and discuss the curriculum guidelines and objectives that guide your programs. • As a whole group, share how these objectives are communicated to teachers.

HighScope Key Develomental Indicators (KDIs) • Within the content areas are 58 Key Developmental Indicators. • The KDIs are based on current child development research and national and state early learning standards • They are written to be universal. Teachers and caregivers from different cultures in the United States and other countries report that they see children engaging in the KDIs • Teachers use the KDIs to guide all aspects of the program.

  6. Why Key Developmental Indicators? • Key– These are meaningful ideas children should learn and experience • Developmental– Recognizes that learning is gradual and cumulative • Indicators – Emphasize that educators need evidence that children are developing knowledge, skills and understanding considered important for school and life readiness

Purpose of the KDIs • To focus adults’ observations and interpretations of children’s actions • To help adults maintain reasonable expectations for children and support children’s emerging capacities • To help answer questions about the legitimacy of children’s play • To guide decisions about materials and the daily routine

  8. KDI Card Game • Read each KDI card and place it under the appropriate KDI category. The number of KDIs in each category are given below to assist you.

  9. KDI Stations • Divide into groups of 2 or 3. • Follow the instructions in your training booklet as you go from station to station. • When you have finished each station, discuss what you found out about the KDIs.

  13. Searching for the KDIs • read the work time scenario and identify as many KDIs as you can using the list on page 3 of your training booklet. • Turn to a partner and share what you’ve found.

  14. KDIs in Your Classroom • On index cards, write down one thing you have seen children in your classroom doing in each of the content areas. • Exchange your cards with another group. • Determine which KDI each card is describing.

  15. Implementation Plan • Complete the implementation plan in your Training Booklet.
