Website • All relevant material is on this www.wjec.co.uk • GCSE History and open all documents • Teacher guidance notes
General issues • Standard of work generally very good • Majority of work hand-written • Most work done in class over several sessions • Problems with non-attendees / senior management • Still much work was over-long • Not all centres used the marking checklist
Part (a) • Main problem was with a set structure of introduction, isolated evaluation and conclusion • Suggested that candidates should be encouraged to integrate their source evaluation into the narrative of the historical events. • Quality of source evaluation varied with candidates often rewarded for irrelevant and incorrect comments.
Part (b) • On the whole, this was done well • Candidates were showing that they understand what interpretations are and how different views are arrived at. • Some answers still need a stronger judgement
Marking and annotation • Around 20% of centres had their raw marks adjusted in 2011. This was higher than normal as the moderating panel felt the need to get things right at the first go. • Recommended that the checklist is used in centres • Annotation within the body of the work does aid the moderation process
Titles / questions • A new pair of exercises must be set for 2012 • If the same exercises are submitted in consecutive years, the work will be returned to the centre and no marks awarded for the unit. • Forms are available for the next two year cycle, 2013-2014. Electronic versions should be sent to Greg Lewis for approval over the next six months. They are available on the website.
OFQUAL SURVEY • The government standards watchdog, OFQUAL, has recently published a report on the introduction of controlled assessment. • The report can be found here www.ofqual.gov.uk/news-and-announcements/130/750
