Homework Hypothesis The time taken for a mixture of oil, water and emulsifier to separate depends on the volume of the emulsifier in the mixture. • Practice writing out your method at home. Use this checklist to help you: • You should include: • The equipment that you plan to use • How you will use the equipment • The measurements that you are going to make • How you will make it a fair test • A risk assessment. • Spelling, punctuation, grammar, clarity of thought.
Controlled Assessment Hypothesis The time taken for a mixture of oil, water and emulsifier to separate depends on the volume of the emulsifier in the mixture. Preliminary experiment to determine a value for a control variable. Variables. Equipment. Key things you need to know Why sharing your results with others is an advantage. Method suited to the hypothesis. Why you chose a particular source. Risk assessment. How to draw a suitable table.
Hypothesis The time taken for a mixture of oil, water and emulsifier to separate depends on the volume of the emulsifier in the mixture. • Think pair share • Without looking at your notes, tell your partner the following about the experiment you have chosen to investigate the hypothesis: • Variables – independent, dependent, control. • How you will do a preliminary investigation to determine the value of one of your control variables. • The equipment you will use. • How you will do the experiment ( step by step). • Risk assessment – what are the risks? How are they dangerous? How will you control for them? • How you design a table to record your results. • Why you chose the source that you did ( think about reliability of the source, usefulness of the method). • Why it is an advantage to share your results.
To do: Hypothesis The time taken for a mixture of oil, water and emulsifier to separate depends on the volume of the emulsifier in the mixture. • Practice writing out key information about your method. Use this checklist to help you: [Total marks = 9] • You should include: • The equipment that you plan to use • How you will use the equipment • The measurements that you are going to make • How you will make it a fair test • A risk assessment. • Spelling, punctuation, grammar, clarity of thought. Self assess: Method [9] You have listed all major equipment. [1] Your method is clear enough for someone else to follow and get similar results.[2] You have stated which measurements you will make ( e.g. 5cm3 of oil/water, shake for 5 seconds….etc). [1] You have also mentioned the important control variables and how you will control them. [1] You have identified significant hazards, said how they are dangerous and how you will control the risk. [2] Your answer is coherentwith a logical sequence and you have used keywords ( emulsion, emulsifier, hypothesis, independent/dependent/control variable). [1] Your answer has almost faultless spelling, punctuation and grammar. [1]
Designing a table: Self assess You have labelled your variables( headings) and give their units e.g. time in seconds, volume in cm3 [1] You have shown some indication of the measurements you will take for the independent variable. [1]
To do: Answer the following questions: Identify the different variables in your experiment. Which source did you choose to use and why? ( compare and contrast the usefulness of both sources). Why is it an advantage to share your results with other groups ( think of 3 points). How will you conduct a preliminary investigation to find a suitable value for a control variable?
Advantages of sharing results Enables you to compare results with others to see similarities and differences in trends. More results enable you to calculate a more accurate mean and minimise the effect of random errors. It enables you to see if your experiment is reproducible.
Key points • Sources – write down the two sources you researched ( title, author/ name of website). • To justify why you chose a particular source you have to compare and contrast both sources and give the advantage of the one you chose . • Preliminary investigation ( 3 points): • state the control variable you will be focussing on. • State the limits of the range you will investigate (e.g. 5cm3 and 10cm3 of oil). • Say how your results can help you determine the best value for this variable. • Method [9 marks] – equipment, coherent logical method, risk assessment, spelling, grammar, punctuation. • Sharing results ( 3 points) : • Enables you to compare results with others to see similarities and differences in trends. • More results enable you to calculate a more accurate mean and minimise the effect of random errors. • It enables you to see if your experiment is reproducible. • Table of results – headings/labels, units, measurements for independent variable.
