UNITARY • Unitary – The central government makes laws for the entire nation; local governments have very limited power.
FEDERATION • Federation – central government shares power with local governments; central gov’t sets the minimums of what the locals can control.
CONFEDERATION • Confederation – the central power is given specific powers by the local governments.
AUTHORITY • Who has the power in the government? • Dictatorship • Democracy • Theocracy
DICTATORSHIP • Dictatorship – power is concentrated in a small group (sometimes a single person)
OLIGARCHY • A dictatorship run by a small group of people.
MONARCHY • A dictatorship where the “power” passes down through the blood line.
CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY • A legislative body has the true power, and the monarch is just a figurehead.
THEOCRACY • The ruling power is a religious leader/organization
DEMOCRACY • The citizens have the power • Direct – citizens vote on every thing • Representative – citizens elect someone to represent their views
DIRECT DEMOCRACY • The citizens actually vote themselves on the specific issues • Sometimes use a plebiscite
REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY • The citizens elect representative to vote for them on government issues.
