  2. What is Stress? • Your body’s physical response to changes that go on around you.

  3. The 2 Types of Stress Distress Stress that is negative and can cause illnesses Causes feelings such as anxiety, fear, sadness, depression.

  4. Examples of Distress: • A death in the family • Divorce • Failing a test • Moving to a new home/school • Giving a speech

  5. Eustress Positive stress, stress that can help you reach your peak potential. Causes feelings such as excitement, joy, happiness

  6. Examplesof Eustress: • Graduation • Going on a roller coaster • Making a team at school • Getting good grades • Going on vacation

  7. What is a stressor? Anything that causes stress. Stressors can be negative or positive.

  8. What is a Defense Mechanism? A way that people mentally deal with stress. When people make excuses or blame others instead of admitting they are just stressed out about a situation.

  9. Physical ways to deal with Stress: Negative: • Smoking cigarettes • Drinking alcohol • Doing drugs • Bullying • Fighting

  10. Positive • Exercising • Take a walk • Reading • Crying • Listen to music

  11. Fight-or-Flight Response

  12. What is the fight-or-flight response? The way your body physically deals with stress.

  13. Steps in the fight-or-flight response…..

  14. Step#1 A stressor needs to occur.

  15. Step#2 The stressor stimulates the body to release a hormone called adrenaline.

  16. Adrenaline helps in 4 ways: • Makes you really strong • Stops you from feeling pain • Helps you think clearly • Helps erase traumatic memories

  17. Step#3 The body releases glycogen, the body’s form of stored sugar. Glycogen gives the body a back-up supply of energy.

  18. Many physical changes occur…. • Sweating increases • Breathing increases • Blood to heart, lungs, muscles and brain increase

  19. Immune and digestive system slow down because less blood is sent to these parts of the body.

  20. What 3 substances give us energy during fight-or-flight response? • Adrenaline • Glycogen • Oxygen

  21. Long-term stress can lead to…. • Heart Attack • High Blood Pressure • Stroke • Ulcer • Depression • Suicide

  22. Warning Signs of Suicide…. • Talking about it • Being depressed • Giving away prized possessions • Dropping usual activities • Stop talking to friends/family • Not taking care of one’s self
