  2. Setting the Scene • Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar wanted every one of the state’s registered voters go to the polls at election time. To help reach a goal, he launched a program in 2001 that gave each gradating high school senior in state a voter registration application.

  3. Citizenship: Voting and Election • Citizen play an active role in their government. If you wasn’t born in the U.S. you was a naturalized. Many citizen display patriotism. Patriotism is the characteristic of a good citizen, the noblest passion that animates a man or woman in the charter of a citizen. Soldiers who have died defending their country are and example of patriots.

  4. Voting • Voting is the most common form of citizen participation. Not everyone who lives in the Untied states can vote. In order to vote, one must be a citizen. People convicted of a felony lose their rights to vote until they severed any punishment ordered by the courts and if you didn’t finish you lose your right to vote. In Texas, a person must be at least 18 years old to vote.

Elections • There are three types of election in Texas. • Primary Election - members of a political party choose their candidates for the general election. • General Election - voters choose who will government the city, states, or country. • Special Election - to fill offices that are called vacant. • People may vote for constitutional amendments. They also vote in referendums. This is an election in which voters approve or reject new laws. Citizens may also decide whether to remove an official from office.

  6. Citizenship: Taking Part • Since 1955, women have been eligible to serve on juries in Texas. You must be a least 18 to serve on a jury. By serving on a jury, citizens help preserve the right of all Americans to fair trail by a jury of their peers. • Staying informed is another way to promote citizenship. Good citizens understand our democratic values and patriotism. These people think well of, understand enjoy, and grateful for the demarcation values of their state and county.

Vocabulary • Citizen- a member of a nation who is entitled to full rights. • Naturalized - the condition of having become a citizen by meeting certain requirements. • Patriotism – the love one’s country; passion which aims to serve one’s country, either from invasion, or protecting its rights maintaining its laws and institutions in vigor and purity.
