Format Review • Format: what are some basic things to remember about format?
Indent the first line of each paragraph • There should be 2 spaces after each period (.) • When you end one sentence, continue writing on the same line. • For example: I have two cats. They are both boys and they love to play.
Page 16: Writing Skill • Topic Sentence: Identifies one main idea and what the writer will say about it (it will give an idea of the writer’s opinion): • Example: There are many holidays but my favorite holiday is American Thanksgiving. • What do you think I’ll write about, if this is my topic sentence?
Supporting sentences are in the middle of the paragraph (or essay). They support my topic sentence with example, reasons, details, and explanations.
Concluding Sentence: last sentence of a paragraph or essay and closes the paragraph by repeating main points in different words. • There are different ways to close your essay that we will talk about later
Part A and B • Read the paragraph • Topic Sentence: When you start a job, you can leave a bad impression on your co-workers very quickly without realizing it.
Part C. • Supporting sentences: • One way to annoy your co-workers is to speak loudly on your phone. • Another common mistake is to take the last cup of coffee and not make another pot of coffee. • Leaving your cell phone on is another way you could unknowingly irritate your co-workers and cause them to form a bad impression on you. • Concluding Sentence: Finding your dream job may take a lot of time and effort, but unfortunately, leaving a bad impression on your co-workers can be done quickly and easily!
Page 17: Outline • The outline is a plan of what you want to write. It does not need to include complete sentences, but just your ideas so you can organize your thoughts before you start writing. • It’s like the skeleton: there’s the bones, but no meat! The supporting details and complete sentences are the meat!
Page 18 • Subtopics and supporting details: • A: figure out why others are upset • 1. Think about the conversation • 2. Did you tell a bad joke? B: Be prepared 1. Make a plan about what to say and what not to say 2. Don’t make the same mistake twice C: Be positive and interested 1. Don’t bring up the bad past experience 2. Ask questions and pay attention
Concluding Sentence: • There is no magic formula to turn to a negative impression into a positive one….
Grammar • If you eat cake every day, you gain weight. • If you eat cake every day= condition • You gain weight = result • What other conditions can you think of? • What are their results?
