Using videos as triggers in web-based PBL Presentation by Anne-Christine Persson Björn Bergdahl Faculty of Health Sciences, Linköping University
The Faculty of Health Sciences Linköping University • 2500 students in 9 different programmes: medicine, nursing, physiotherapy… • PBL since 1986 • Web-based scenarios since 2001 (EDIT) • 160 web-based scenarios have been produced • In 70 scenarios, short video films are used
Within the hospital environment • Patient interviews in different settings • Physical examinations • Movement patterns • Survilance and treatment • Diagnostic material (images, sounds) and procedures
To go outside the ward • To other wards and units • To the home of the patient • To the surrounding community • To the workplaces • To other countries • To other historic periods
New perspective by looking at the situation • From the patients’ point of view • From the relatives’ point of view • From other professionals’ point of view • From the experts’ point of view
Lessons learned • Short videos are possible to make on a low budget • Videos make PBL scenarios more realistic and thereby more motivating • Videos can be used to evoke emotions and to challenge students’ previous knowledge and values • Students appreciate videos as triggers
