Why Study Perinatal Health Twelve years ago, West Virginia birth statistics were much brighter than today. The State’s rates for pre-term birth, primary C-sections, and low birth weight infants were all more positive for healthy outcomes What we did Key Informant Survey Data analysis Studies
What we found • Medical System Concerns • Non-compliance with ACOG and AAP Guidelines • NICU Beds – 100 % capacity • Deteriorating system for medical consultation • Low breastfeeding rates • Maternity provider shortage areas • Poor oral health • Drug use • No worksite wellness • High smoking rates
Key Informant Survey • West Virginia has only a few physicians who specialize in high-risk pregnancy and newborn care.
Design Statewide Perinatal System • Standards of Care • Update the medical consultation system • Design telecommunications • Hospital self assessment • Study adequacy of NICU beds. • Uniform maternal risk assessment
Obstetrical Provider Shortages • Identify areas of state without obstetrical coverage and design a rural maternity service that is economically feasible • Study options for medical liability coverage.
Addressing the Needs of Perinatal Practitioners • Rural physicians and CNMs in West Virginia have expressed the need for closer communication with specialists.
