Introduction to: Research Papers English 12 - Ms. Nadia Aldroubi
The Process - Genre • Determine a Genre: • understanding the difference between analytical and argumentative research papers.
The Process - Genre • Analytical Research Papers: • Begin with the student asking a question (a.k.a. research question) on which he has taken no stance. • Often are an exercise in exploration and evaluation. • Do not have the intent to persuade the audience.
The Process - Genre • Argumentative Research Papers: • Consist of an introduction in which the writer clearly introduces the topic and informs his audience exactly which stance he intends to take (a.k.a. thesis statement). • Maintain an important goal of persuasion, which means the topic chosen should be debatable or controversial.
The Process - Genre • Analytical Examples • How should one interpret the poem Beowulf? • What happens when one steals a puppy? • How does one make a grilled cheese? • Argumentative Examples • Smoking should be illegal. • Home schooling should not be tolerated. • Abortion should always be the woman’s choice.
The Process - Topic • Choose a Topic: • the process of choosing topics, whether the topic be one that is assigned or one that the student chooses himself.
The Process - Topic • Instructor Given • This eliminates the stress of having to decide upon a topic on their own. • However, it may be limiting and students may have a topic in mind that does not fit with those provided. • Ask if there is a topic you would like to cover that is not listed. • Student Chosen • These typically must be approved by the teacher. • Students can choose a topic that interest them. • Guidelines may not be as strict as instructor given topics. • Ultimately, students have more freedom.
The Process - Audience • Identify an Audience: • understand the often times confusing topic of audience by offering some basic guidelines for the process.
The Process - Audience • To determine the audience in academic writing, ask: • Who is the general audience I want to reach? • Who is most likely to be interested in the research I am doing? • Will each member of the audience agree with what I have to say? • If not, what is my counter-argument?
The Process - Audience • Factors to consider audience: • Subject matter • Calculus paper to an audience of English students – NO. • Educational level • Dissertation proposal to an audience of sixth-graders – NO. • Environment • Present an economics project in the park – NO.
The Process • To Perfect Writing: • Practice the process. • Experience is key. • Organization is a necessity. • Understand the assignment at hand. • Do not procrastinate.
