The following terms are useful when considering the relationship between Taming of the Shrew and Ten Things I Hate About You. • Appropriation • Transformation • Value • Context • Attitude • Intertextuality
Appropriation and Transformation • Appropriation • Using the material from one text/ source in a new text. This is part of the process of transformation. • An example would be adapting a play to a film. Taming of the Shrew is appreciated and updated into Ten Things I Hate About You. • Stories are often appropriated because they hold “truths” about the human condition (human emotion and human nature) which cross all social, historical and cultural boundaries. • Transformations are texts that have been appropriated (the central ideas have been copied from another text). • A type of intertextuality. • Good ideas and stories never really die. We update them, change them into our favourite format (be it a novel, song, film etc) and reproduce them.
Intertextuality • The relationship between texts. • Can be as a result of a transformation of a previous text into a different format or rewritten to update it to a new historical period. • An example of intertextuality would be the relationship between Taming of the Shrew and Ten Things I Hate About You.
Context • The historical, social and cultural circumstances that surround a particular situation, event, text, composer or responder. • The different historical, social and cultural contexts of a text will shape the values embedded in it. • The historical, social and cultural contexts of the composer will influence their attitudes towards various social values embedded in their text. • The different historical, social and cultural contexts in which the text is received will influence the response of the reader/ audience. • QUESTION: How do these processes apply to Taming of the Shrew and Ten Things I Hate About You.
Values and Attitudes • Values • The ideas or principles that a person or group believe to be important. • Values may include ideas generosity, honesty and integrity. • They may also include beliefsabout particular social issues or assumptions. • Attitudes • The position/ opinion of the composer in relation to particular social situations or values. Values are embedded in texts E.g. Opinion regarding gender roles in society
