INFORMATION SOCIETY IN POZNAŃ – CURRENT STATUS Outstanding specialists in the field of Information Society Technologies, including these working at: uPoznań Supercomputing and Networking Center, (recentlydiscovered protection errors in the Windows system), u the Poznań University of Technology, u the Poznań Academy of Economics, uMoreover, issues related to the development of IS constitute a part of study curricula at the Poznań University

Excellent municipal network infrastructure POZMAN - Metropolitan Area Network and PSNC, its operator and City Hall’s partner in the implementation of IST projects: u network’s length: 220 km of optical fiber lines u technology: ATM 622 Mb/s and Gigabit Ethernet u 43 scientific centers, network connects: public administration units (City Hall, Marshall’s Office, Office of the Wielkopolska Province), majority of hospitals,municipal institutions, commercial clients(e.g. Volkswagen, Wrigley, GlaxoSmithKline, banks)

The “Polish Optical Internet” PIONIER Project developed by PSNC, i.e. Internet 2 - New Generation Internet, officially launched in Poznań- October 2003: • advanced applications, services and technologies for the information society: e-science, e-learning, e-content, e-government • connection to 21 Metropolitan Area Networks in Poland • current 2.5 Gb/s connection to the pan- European scientific network (the fastest connection in Poland) • up to 10 Gb/s by 2003
NEW TECHNOLOGIES USED FOR MUNICIPAL SERVICES AND ADMINISTRATION • Traffic Control System • New generation bus tickets (SMS, electronic cards) • Electronic Parking Fee System
NEW TECHNOLOGIES USED FOR MUNICIPAL SERVICES AND ADMINISTRATIONcont. IT systems used by city administration: u 8 locations linked by a corporate network u nearly 1,000 computers linked to the corporate network u integrated systems that support administration.
CITY HALL AND THE INTERNET Long-standing engagement of the City Hall in the development of IT systems and services available on the Internet u almost 150 Internet users at the City Hall u almost 70 persons who on-line feed Internet information resources u “Multimedia City Guide” MIM (from 1998), one of the largest Polish local government on-line information services: 3.6 GB, nearly 1,800,000 inquiries per month, 17.5 GB of data sent per month. www.city.poznan.pl

Poznan Educational Service www.city.poznan.pl/oswiata: • specialist information and service portal run by the employees of the City Hall’s Department of Education • databases and information resources fed on-line • employment exchanges for headmasters, teachers and other employees working in the education sector (during 18 months of its operations, nearly 2,000 applications have been sent and nearly 500 persons found work at schools in Poznań).

Computer system for enrolment to post-gymnasium (secondary) schools: • the first in Poland integrated system for enrolment • 93 schools and school complexes participating in the projectin 2003 • nearly 10,000 students included in the system • the enrolment process has been successfully completed (at the time of formal announcement of results, the students could check their results by logging into the system and entering their PESEL personal identification numbers) • the smoothest and fastest completed enrollment process in Poland

Service for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises www.city.poznan.pl/msp: uspecialist information and service portal run by the employees of City Hall’s Department of Business Affairs, udatabases and information resources fed on- line ucomplete set of forms allowing for online servicing of all procedures related with Business Register (from the launch of the service in August 2003, up to 20% procedures have been serviced via the Internet)

City Hall’s Public Information Bulletin bip.city.poznan.pl: • information service forming a part of Multimedia City Guide launched on July 1, 2003 pursuant to the act on the access to public information • all public information is subject to statutory requirements • procedures and forms binding at the City Hall and its units • contact with all city institutions
PLANS FOR THE NEAREST FUTURE • new Internet services for residents • Public Internet Access Points based on the municipal public library network • full archiving of electronic workflow • introduction of electronic signature software to on-line services on January 1, 2006. • Poznań Advanced Technology Incubator
