Blizzard Retold by: Jihee
Chapter 1“No!” 10-year-old Jesse cried. It was snowing. She was outside on a hill on a sled to go down with her best friend Bobby. “You can’t be moving away!” She was filled with grief. Bobby was Jesse’s best friend for as long as she can remember. She couldn’t believe he was moving away. “Hey, we’ll still call each other. Don’t worry.” Bobby replied. A car pulled in the driveway of Jesse’s house. A friendly face poked out of the passenger seat. It was the last face she wanted to see. It was Bobby’s mom. “Bobby!” she called. “We have to go!” Jesse looked at Bobby. “Time for you to go,” Jesse said miserably. “Bye.”
“So you want to go down the hill one last time?” Bobby asked. Jesse silently nodded her head, and hey climbed aboard Bobby’s blue sled. When they reached the bottom, Bobby stood up. “I have to go now,” Bobby said quietly. “Bye for real.” As the car pulled out of the driveway, Bobby waved out of the backseat. Jesse was devastated. She trudged into her house and went upstairs and slouched on her bed. She started crying. Nothing was worse than this.
A week later, Jesse’s mother called for her. “Jesse!” her mother said, “We have a very special guest!”“Bobby?” Jesse shouted in disbelief and excitement. “No, honey, it’s Aunt Millie!” Jesse’s mother shouted gleefully. Jesse was grieved again. “Why is she here?” Jesse asked miserably. “Don’t say that! It’s rude.” Jesse’s mom scolded. “Aunt Millie is staying for a week. Please be respectful to her, Jesse. I now you’re sad. Just be nice, ok?” Jesse’s mother went to greet Aunt Millie. Aunt Mille came with lots bags and luggage. “Hello, pumpkin! How were you? Oh, you grew so much! Thank you for having me here, Jesse. Let’s go up to your bedroom.” As Jesse’s father heaved the luggage into the house, Aunt Millie and Jesse climbed upstairs into the Jesse’s bedroom.

I’m sorry.” Aunt Millie was so sincere about this; it felt like Aunt Millie actually went through this situation. “I’m fine, don’t mind me.” Jesse mumbled. Aunt Millie came to Jesse and sat down next to her. “I know a story about a girl in the same situation as you.” Aunt Millie said reassuringly. “I don’t feel like a story, Aunt Millie.” Jesse said, but Aunt Millie went on. “Just listen closely, Jesse,” Aunt Millie said. “You just have to listen.”
Katie was skating at a close ice rink when she heard her mom shouting at her for hot chocolate. Katie glided over to a hut next to the skating rink. The skating rink was a fairly large pond frozen from the cold winter day. She sat down with her parents and 3 brothers. After maybe 30 minutes, a man came over to her slowly. He glanced at Katie’s mom. “I saw your child skate out there,” the man said. “I’m Otto Brewer. It’s nice to meet you.” Katie, as a skating genius, trembled with excitement. “You’re the former skating champion!” Katie exclaimed. “Oh, yes I am!” Otto said, “And I want to teach you ‘real’ figure skating.” He turned to Katie’s mom. “Ma’am, can I take your daughter in figure skating lessons?” Otto asked.
Katie’s mom smiled at the thought, but then she remembered they couldn’t afford such great lessons. She looked at Otto. “Mr. Brewer, I’d love it and I know Katie would too, but we can't afford such luxurious lessons from a champion.” Katie’s mom felt guiltier as Katie’s face turned into a sad expression. But to her surprise, Otto piped up. “No, no, ma’am. I can take Katie for free. It looks like she has some natural talent there.”Katie was so happy she almost slipped. “Thank you, Otto, thank you!” she cried. As soon as everything was arranged, Katie went out to the ice rink with Otto. “I saw you were good at skating,” Otto said. “You looked confident.” Katie smiled. “I love skating! I want to be a figure skater one day.” She exclaimed. It was true. The reason why Katie came here so much was to practice. Otto looked at Katie. “What is your name again?” Otto asked.
Katie didn’t glace up. “Katie,”“Well, Katie, you do seem confident, but you need to work harder.” Otto replied. “You can’t take figure skating lightly, Katie. You do have natural talent, and you seem fit to be a great figure skater. But you need to be better than now.” Katie looked at Otto. He was looking at her like he really wanted to make her a star. “I know, Otto.” Katie said. “You are teaching me, right? Then go on!”
Meanwhile, in the North Pole, Blitzen and Delphi was in Santa’s stables away from the cold, winter snow. Between them was the smallest little reindeer in the stable. “What should we name her?” Delphi asked. Blizzard was her name.Blizzard grew into a beautiful reindeer that possessed all the powers reindeer magic; the magic to fly, the magic to turn invisible, and the magic to speak to minds and connect to another. Blizzard was flying gracefully until she heard the cry of Katie. Blizzard broke the rules of staying out of human’s way and rushed to the rescue. Many days passed by, and Katie blossomed into a great figure skater. It was Christmas day, and Katie was happy of her increase of skill in figure skating. But while she was going home in her parent’s car, Katie’s dad opened his mouth. “Katie,” he said softly. “I need to tell you something.” Katie’s dad told her he got fired and they needed to move to the city. Katie cried of sadness. That’s when Blizzard came.
On the last day of her lessons, Katie sat beside Otto. Even though he was old, he looked as healthy as a 10 year old. Otto smiled. “I want to give you this.” he took out a old leather box out of his jacket. Katie opened the fragile box to see a rusty but perfectly fine gold championship medal. “Oh my goodness, it’s your gold medal!” Katie exclaimed. “But Otto, why give this to me?” Otto looked at Katie. “I think you are a real champion. Whatever happens, stay strong. Don’t give up.”
Katie, who now befriended Blizzard, was now going to a school in the city. She was walking around the school’s skating rink and saw a girl who was beautiful in figure skating. Katie didn’t notice the girl skating towards her. “What are you doing here?” the girl asked. “The name’s Erin. Now get out! This is only for the skater’s club.” Surprised, Katie rushed out. Blizzard, who was gliding invisibly, was trying to comfort her. Blizzard knew Katie’s feelings; she wanted to join the skater’s club. Katie rushed back in the school and went to the skater club’s teacher, the scariest teacher here in her new school. “What are you doing here, my dear? Now shoo, shoo. I’m busy.” With all her courage, Katie told the teacher.“I want to be in the skating club.”the teacher looked at her surprisingly. “Sit here, girl. Go on with your request.” after lots of convincing, Katie managed to get into the skating club.
Of course, no one liked this. The girl Erin skated up to her. “Why are you here again?” she said. She haven’t changed, but Katie was thinking of her way differently. “I’m here for the skater’s club. I’m in, too.” Katie said confidently. “Well, oh yeah?” Erin sneered, “I’m the best skater here. I’ll watch you, and I’ll show you what you should be up to.” Erin glided over to the center of the rink and stopped sharply. As much as Katie disliked Erin, she must admit that she was beautiful. While she was watching, Katie felt a familiar presence around her. “Blizzard?” Katie whispered. “Is that you?” Blizzard whispered in her mind. Yes, of course it’s me.Katie didn’t like this. “Blizzard, I want to win this fair and square. You can just watch, ok?” she whispered back.Katie also preformed beautifully. Everyone was looking in daze.
After all that, Katie came home. For some reason, Blizzard wasn’t there.Right at that moment, Blizzard was at the court of Santa. “Blizzard, you have broken all the rules. You are sentenced to be in the stable for eternity!” the judge elf exclaimed. Blizzard had to be brought to the stable in shame. The guard elf looked at him. He knew what happened. “You there,” he said. “Blizzard!”Blizzard looked at him sharply. “What do you want?” The elf looked at her. “I want to get you out!” he said. “I’ve got something.” the elf took out the stable keys and got Blizzard out. “Thanks!” she said.
At the city championship, it was Katie’s turn to go up. She was so nervous she couldn’t feel the cold of the ice rink. Blizzard came in a rush. I’m here! She said in Katie’s mind. “Hi Blizzard.” Katie said without looking anywhere but the ice. Look, I’m in HUGE trouble. I just broke out of the stables. AWESOME! Blizzard exclaimed.“That’s awesome alright. Now I gotta go.” Katie glided out as her name was called out. Katie took her place and performed. She slipped once, twice, three times. But because of Blizzard, she never tripped.
In the end, she got first place. Erin was so mad she went outside to get some air. She was so mad she didn’t notice the THIN ICE sign as she was walking onto the ice. She was at the middle of the ice when she noticed that the ice was cracking. “HELP!” she cried. Katie, who was just coming out with a gold medal, saw Erin now sinking into the cold water. Surprised, she called Blizzard. katie jumped on top of Blizzard and headed out. Because she was flying, Katie could got onto the ice safely. When she reached Erin, Katie saw as Erin stared in horror. Now katie noticed that Blizzard was in such a hurry she forgot to become invisible. If she chanv=ged now, it would be more scary. “Just grab on!” Katie yelled to Erin. Erin got back to her senses and grabbed hold.
After this incident, Erin became a humble friend to Katie, and Blizzard wasn’t in trouble anymore.
