Teresa de Avila What Happened? • Ran away to a convent in 1536 after father opposed her plan to become a nun • Since she felt that the practices were too easy, she made some of her own more strict rules regarding fasting, prayer and sleep • Eventually the church gave her permission to reform the Carmelite order • She inspired many future protestants to remain in the church • Born in Spain in 1515 • These events showed religious conflict throughout Europe because: she thought that the practices were too simple, so she decided to make them more challenging
Francis of Sales What Happened? • Worked to regain the district of Savoy • had become a large Calvinist worshiper • because of his mission, a large part of the Calvinist population became Catholic again • later, he founded a religious teaching order for women • These events showed religious conflict throughout Europe because: Due to his mission, a lot of the Calvinists went back to being Catholic.
Charles Borromeo What Happened? • Archbishop of Milan from 1560-1584 • Built a new school for the priests education • Helped carry out the reforms decreed by the Council of Trent • These events showed religious separation throughout Europe because: He helped carry out the reforms decreed by the Council of Trent.
