  1. Social Networking and Education P2P … Web 2.0 T502 Lab October 30/31, 2006

  2. What is a Social Network? • A social network is a social structure made of nodes which are generally individuals or organizations. It indicates the ways in which they are connected through various social familiarities ranging from casual acquaintance to close familial bonds. The term was first coined in 1954 by J. A. Barnes (in: Class and Committees in a Norwegian Island Parish, "Human Relations").1 1Retrieved 10.29.06 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_networking

  3. What is a Social Networking Service? • A social network service is social software specifically focused on the building and verifying of social networks for whatever purpose. Many social networking services are also blog hosting services. As of 2005, there are over three hundred known social networking web sites. 1 1Retrieved 10.29.06 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_social_network

  4. Del.icio.us Scuttle.org Social Networking Service Examples!

  5. Explore Online Social Networks! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites Or, search on TeacherShare.org for “social networking”

  6. Social Networking Exploration Exercise… With a partner, choose at least 3 social networking sites that you belong to or wish to explore and answer the following: • Who is the site’s intended audience? • How does the site connect people? • How would a member benefit from this site’s services? • How could this site enhance/detract from a member’s f2f interpersonal skills? • How does the site differ from the other 2 you chose? ***Take some time to surf each site—have fun!!!***

  7. Discussion / Reactions • Quick poll: • How many of you already belong to one or more social networking sites? • How many visit the sites >= 3 times/wk? • What draws or doesn’t draw you to social networking sites? • Affordances / Limitations? • Concerns?

  8. Socio-Semantic Networking • Using words to connect P2P • Del.icio.us • TeacherShare.org • Steve.museum (thanks Ling!) • Colloquial communication: Tag as we speak • The “gut”—Gutman Library • “unpack”: Ed School word for “explore” • Often uses the classification of URLs as the website’s “hook”

  9. Edtags.org Socio-Semantic Networking Research • Beyond providing vehicles for sharing resources, sociosemantic networking helps participants to develop evolving, collective knowledge structures that reflect interrelationships among tags. • Faculty may also gain insights about how to teach material from the bottom-up vocabulary and systemic interconnections that emerge though collective tagging by students. • That this social networking tool aggregates tags across a broad community can aid Harvard programs in understanding teaching and learning beyond individual faculty insights from a subset of students who are in each particular course.

  10. Del.icio.us Scuttle.org A few Socio-Semantic Platforms

  11. Socio-Semantic Networking in Education? In groups of 3, take 15 minutes to explore 2 of the following socio-semantic websites and think about how they may be relevant to the field of education: • www.teachershare.org • www.del.icio.us • www.steve.museum • www.flickr.com • www.connotea.org • www.citeulike.org • www.ma.gnolia.com

  12. Discussion / Reactions • How do socio-semantic network sites differ from the previous social networking sites? • What uses did you find for socio-semantic websites in education? • Is it better to save bookmarks to your browser, a website, or both?

  13. Safety/Security of Social Networking • Online Predators • H.R. 5319: Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006 (DOPA): “To amend the Communications Act of 1934 to require recipients of universal service support for schools and libraries to protect minors from commercial social networking websites and chat rooms.”1 • Web repositories: (Wayback Machine) **What you post online now may be there forever!** 1Retrieved 10.29.06 from http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h109-5319

  14. Summary • Social networking connects P2P • Socio-semantic networking connects P2P through words, idioms, expressions, etc. • Both exemplify the social direction of user site contributions integral to Web 2.0 • Questions?
