Vayishlach (And he sent) Genesis/B’reisheet 32:4 – 36:43 “Ya’akov Wrestles”
Jacob’s Life • He was tricky and deceitful. • He tricked his older brother Esau out of his birthright. • He tricked his blind father Isaac into blessing him instead of blessing Esau. • He also tricked Laban, his uncle, out of his sheep.
Esau is coming for a visit • Esau is bringing a security detail of 400 men with him • Jacob was afraid. • Jacob deals with the situation the same way he has in the past.
Jacob’s Plan • He splits his family and herds into two groups. • He asks God to remember him for prosperity. • Jacob arranged for a series of gifts to be sent to Esau. • He arranged for his wives and herds to cross the river ahead of him • He spends the night alone.
Jacob Wrestles • Jacob won the wrestling match! • Jacob's hip was wrenched at the socket.
The Morning is Coming • This opponent of Jacob's is different. • When defeated, he tells Jacob to let him go! • Dawn was breaking and the opponent needs to leave. • Jacob tells the opponent he will not release him unless he blesses him.
Jacob’s Blessing – Name Changed to Israel • The man changes his name. • The opponent says his name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel. • Israel means wrestles with God, because Jacob wrestled with God and man and succeeded.
Peniel • Jacob realizes that something very important has happened in this place • He gives it the name Peniel or the face of God. • He has seen the face of God and his life has been saved.
A Changed Jacob • The changed and humbled Jacob when seeing Esau bows before his brother seven times. • Esau runs to his brother Jacob, they kiss as they meet. • They also cry because they are happy.
Brothers United • Then Jacob tells Esau seeing his face is like seeing the face of God. • Jacob asked Esau to please accept his gifts. • If we love God we must love people also.
Yeshua’s teaching To Us • Yeshua said, “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Torah and the Prophets” (Mattityahu 7:12) • “The Golden Rule”.
