3. 3 Types of Child Abuse • Emotional Abuse When a child shows behaviors that infers to mental health or social development (ex: yelling, screaming, name calling, etc) • Sexual Abuse Any sexual act between an adult and a child. (ex: fondling, pornography, etc.) • Physical Abuse Any injury a child obtains that is non-accidental. (ex: hitting, kicking, hair pulling, punching, etc.)

Neglect Physical Indicators: Behavioral Indicators: Unusual school attendance Chronic hunger or tiredness Begging or collecting leftovers Assuming adult responsibilities Reporting no caretaker at home • Poor hygiene (bed sores, lice, body odor, etc) • Unsuitable Clothing • Untreated illness or injury • Lack of immunizations • Indicators of prolonged exposure to elements • Height & Weight significantly under age level

7. Evaluation of a Child Abuse Prevention Curriculum for Third-Grade Students This study assessed the effects of a 3rd grade child abuse prevention program using a random allocation of schools. Changed the curriculum by adding to the: 1)Breadth of coverage from child sexual abuse to physical, sexual, emotional, neglect & domestic violence 2) Two 1 hr. sessions Results: The main significant difference was on the item: “If someone tries to touch the private parts of your body, is there someone that is not a member of your family that you can tell.” Intervention group: 47%-70% Control group: 57%-62 The children that experienced the intervention program increased approx. 28%

Teacher Responsibilities Barriers Teachers Face Steps to Reporting Child Abuse Schools have administrative policies with regard to these situations Report the following to Child Protective Services: Childs name & identifying marks on the child All information known about the biological parents and/or caregivers Address of all associated family/gaurdians Dates of noted incidents History of previous noted incidents History of any contact with alleged abuse and any other information • What actually constitutes abuse • Personal reactions to learning of a child’s abuse • Unclear guidelines regarding reporting the alleged abuse- Unprepared • Fear regarding the outcome of the report 1974 Congress passed Child Abuse & Treatment Act; Law 93-247 : Mandates that school & other professionals report child abuse or face misdemeanor charges.
