How is GIS used in Recreation: • Determine Land Use Opportunities and plan future recreation facilities • Census Block comparisons are made to determine if there is any economic unfairness • Looks at Forestry • Determine distances between recreation areas • Calculate Number of Visitors • Patterns of Visitors such as hikers, bikers, horse riders and runners.
Project Abstract and Goals: • Answer Question: What types of outdoor recreation is available in Salt Lake County and where? • Identify and Locate data about recreational areas in Salt Lake County. • Capture and Spatially Display Data • Analyze the map and research the many areas of recreational use in Salt Lake County. • Identify possible recreation shortfalls and excesses.
Project Background: • Salt Lake County runs facilities across the Salt Lake Valley which include recreation centers, parks, golf courses, ice centers, softball complexes, swimming pools and other sites such as Wheeler Historic Farm.

Locate data about Recreation in Salt Lake County. Data was found on the Utah GIS Portal website and designated and layers were selected on a Salt Lake County only basis.
Capture and Spatially Display Data: While creating my map and gathering data, I noticed that the Salt Lake County Park and Recreation website had many maps already created. Therefore, I chose to think outside the box and display outdoor recreation areas available to the people of Salt Lake County. I purpose people would not think of many of the areas I foundon a daily basis as place to venture to for recreation.
Choosing Symbolism: Here is my finalized map.
Many county operated parks are located centrally in down town in Salt Lake City There are Numerous close campgrounds with in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and also Millcreek Canyon . Analyzing Data and Observations: Shortfall: More prospects for county operated facilities in the West side of the valley . State Parks to Visit
FOREST AREAS There are many areas of outdoor recreation in Salt Lake County that are free and accessible to the public. There is opportunity for expansion in the future and some projects currently in progress. Analyzing Data and Observations(Continued): GOLF COURSES and RIVERS
