Terminology • Plate Appearance: • When a player completes their turn at bat • At Bat: • When a player completes their turn at bat with something other than a base on balls or a sacrifice • Hit: • When the ball lands in fair territory without the defensive player being able to make a routine play on the ball, and the batter runner and all runners reaching at least one base safely. • Error: • When the defensive player does not complete the play that should have resulted in an out for the offensive team. (This includes a dropped foul fly ball that is a routine play.)
Terminology cont. • Fielder’s Choice: • When the offense has runners on base and the batter hits the ball and one of the runners has a play made on them without the batter-runner being put out at first. • Batter-runner: • Batter after they have hit the ball • Sacrifice (Slow Pitch Softball): • Batter hits a fly ball that is caught by the defense player. The base runner tags up from their base and scores a run without an error being made. • When does the next inning begin: • The next inning begins upon the 3rd out being made in the previous inning.
Terminology cont. • Emergency add: • This is a player that is being added to the roster sometime after 48 hours before game • This can be used one time and for one player per team per season. • Flip Flop Rule: • When the visiting team is ahead by 25 runs after 2 innings, 20 runs after 3 innings and 15 After 4 innings. The bases are cleared and the original home team stays up to bat and now becomes the visiting team. • Run Rule: • When the home team is ahead by 25 runs after 2 1/2 innings, 20 runs after 3 1/2 innings or 15 After 4 1/2 innings, or the visiting team is ahead by 25 runs after 3 innings, 20 runs after 4 innings or 15 After 5 innings.
Score Sheet • Blue highlight: List teams playing • (Left of team mark if Home or Visitor) • Pink highlight: List batting order • Yellow highlight: Number or an identifier • Gray highlight: Put the number of runs for that inning / for the game • Green highlight: Record how each player did for the game
Score sheet symbols • Single = 1B or S • Double = 2B or D • Triple = 3B or T • Home Run = HR • Fielders Choice = FC • Base on Balls = BB or W • Ground Out = position to position: SS to 1B 6 – 3 • Fly Out = F position: to left field F7 • Sacrifice Fly = SAC position to right field sac10 • Strikeout / Foul out = K • Scoring a Run = Color in the diamond or write the number or runs at the time, that run scored made their score. • Out = The number of outs that made for the inning circled.
Defensive positions • Pitcher = 1 • Catcher = 2 • First Base = 3 • Second base = 4 • Third Base = 5 • Shortstop = 6 • Left Field = 7 • Left Center Field = 8 • Right Center Field = 9 • Right Field = 10
