  2. Pesticide Safety • Read the label carefully. • Follow all directions and precautions.

  3. Pesticide Safety • Check the recommended uses to be certain it is correct for intended use.

  4. Pesticide Safety • Have clean water and detergents available to cleanup spills.

  5. Pesticide Safety • Wear protective clothing called for on the label including rubber chemical gloves or respirator.

  6. Pesticide Safety • Use extra caution with concentrated chemicals when mixing. • Always wear protective gloves or goggles.

  7. Pesticide Safety • Apply the chemical with care. • Use only amount needed on the target area.

  8. Pesticide Safety • Mix just enough for the job at hand.

  9. Pesticide Safety • Guard against inhaling or swallowing chemical or its fumes, mist, or dust.

  10. Pesticide Safety • Consider weather conditions…. • Apply when forecasted conditions are favorable. • Avoid strong winds and heavy rain.

  11. Pesticide Safety • Store and dispose of chemicals properly. • Keep in original container, in a locked area, away from children or animals, and away from food or animal feed. • Check with cooperative extension or sanitary landfill about proper disposal.

  17. EPA Pesticide Handling Regulations

  18. Pesticide Regulations • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) • The agency mandated by Congress to regulate pesticides.

  19. EPA Registration Number Environmental Protection Agency • Pesticides must be approved by the EPA before they can be sold in the United States.

  20. Pesticide Usages • EPA classifies pesticides as general use or restricted use. • Users of restricted use pesticides must be certified applicators or under the direct supervision of a certified applicator.

  21. Pesticide Use Violations • Unintentional violation of regulations can result in civil penalties. • Intentional violations can result in criminal penalties.

  22. Restricted Entry Intervals • Restricted Entry Intervals regulations state that: • No unprotected person may be in the treated area during pesticide application. • Time from application to reentry is stated. • Warnings to workers must be given to workers in a language they understand.

  24. Restricted Pesticide Use Regulations • Records must be kept for two years by applicator of restricted use pesticides.

  25. Pesticide Toxicity Categories • EPA established four toxicity categories and reentry times for each.

  26. Pesticide Toxicity Categories • Toxicity I • Chemicals have “Danger-Poison” on label. • Warning signs must be posted. • No one may re-enter treated area for 48 hours after application.

  27. Pesticide Toxicity Categories • Toxicity II • Chemicals have “Warning” on label. • No one may re-enter treated area for 24 hrs.

  28. Pesticide Toxicity Categories • Toxicity III • Chemicals have “Caution” on label. • Re-entry can occur as soon as the dust or spray mist settles.

  29. Pesticide Toxicity Categories • Toxicity IV • Chemicals have no warning word on label. • Treated areas may be re-entered immediately.
