The SS • Led by Heinrich Himmler • Controlled the Gestapo • Role was to enforce compliance • Arrested political enemies and sent them to concentration camps using Form D-11 (a self referral form!)
Persecution • Untermenschen - subhuman • Boycotts of shops and villification of customers • Nuremburg laws remove rights of Jews • Kristallnacht • 1936, Reich Church created • Concordat with Catholic Church • Priests and pastors arrested if sermons were anti-nazi
Education • Nazified curriculum • Based on Social Darwinism • Importance of 'blood purity' • Gender specific - military focus for boys, motherhood based for girls • Eugenics • Geography / History taught to show the wrongs of Versailles
Youth • Hitler Youth organisation • Groups for boys and girls aged 10 to 18 • Military style - developed toughness - for boys • Attendance poor - made compulsory in 1939 • Some teachers complained about the impact on pupils
Propaganda • Joseph Goebbels was Minister of Propaganda and Enlightenment • Reich Chamber of Commerce (1933) controlled literature, art, music and radio • Olympics in 1936 and Nuremburg Rallies • Films such as Triumph of the Will • Censorship introduced
