Project Management • Requirement: BA, MA preferred, industry experience preferred • Tools: Adobe Acrobat, MS Office, TM (translation memory) tools • Tasks: manage the flow of translation requests
Desktop Publishing • Requirement: college degree in graphic design and knowledge of multiple platforms and Publishing software • Portfolio of work needed at interview • Tools: MS Windows, Mac OS X, Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe FrameMaker & PageMaker, Quark XPress • Tasks: using DTP software, create a translated document from source files including artwork and fonts.
Document Engineering • Requirement: knowledge of document formats, markup languages (html, xml, etc.) & TM software • Tools: Adobe CS3-6, Acrobat X Pro, markup language editor (html, xml, xlf, etc.), SDL Trados Studio, MemoQ, WordFast • Tasks: produce a translatable document from a source document (PDF to Word) or a translated document from the translatable file (TM file to MS Word)
Software R&D • Requirements: ability to research and evaluate any piece of software needed to complete a project whether for document engineering, translation memory/machine translation, etc. • Tools: various, both open and closed source programs • Tasks: Research, develop and/or evaluate software
Translation & Editing • Requirements: College degree in language, ≥ 3-5 years experience translating, varying degrees of knowledge in medical, legal, financial, technical terminology. • Tools: MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, Translation Memory tools • Tasks: Translate, edit, verify quality of translation
Translation Memory vs. Machine Translation • Translation Memory creates a database of translated segments/sentences for use in repetitive future translations. • i.e. SDL Trados, MemoQ, WordFast • Machine Translation uses a set of various parameters to create a translation from source text. • i.e. Google Translate or ProMT
PM vs Translator • Project Management is a steady, often office-bound job with a set salary and often long hours with no extra compensation for overtime. • Translators make their own hours and can work where ever they can get internet access.
One Way to Get Started in Translation • Start at a translation agency to get industry experience. • Go to conferences and build relationships with other translators to network. • Learn as much as you can about translation memory software.
