Thomas Hobbes1588-1679 • Believed people were naturally violent. • Life w/o government would be chaos. • Strong leadership required to ensure peace and security. • Contract between ruler and people. People gave up some rights for peace and security. • Best government was ruler w/ absolute power. • People did not have the right to revolt.
John Locke1632-1704 • Contract between elected representatives and people. • The purpose of government was to establish order and protect people’s rights. • Citizens have the right to life, liberty and property. • Rulers could only stay in power as long as they had the support of the people (revolution okay).
Baron de Montesquieu1689-1755 • Tyranny can be avoided by using a limited monarchy. • To prevent the abuse of power it is necessary to separate the power of government into: • Legislative: creates laws • Executive: enforces laws • Judiciary: interprets laws • No branch should dominate the other.
Voltaire1694-1778 • Women should be treated as equals • Freedom of thought is most important: “I do not agree with a word you say but I will defend to the death the right to say it.” • Favoureda strong “Enlightened Monarch” who studied the sciences of government and protected the basic rights of the people. • Anti-religion
Jean Jacques Rousseau(1712- 1778) • Believed feelings were more important than reason. • Believed people should live in harmony with nature. • Government should be a contract between people and not between people and a ruler. • People should give up all titles of rank • People are equal and have a vote on all decisions. • Women should be educated to serve men.
Mary Wollstonecraft(1759 -1797) • Argued for women’s equality and humane treatment of animals
