  1. National 5 Physical Education

  2. Learning Intentions • Pupils will gain a better understanding of the Mental Factors • Pupils will understand how mental factors can impact performance, in both a positive and negative way.

  3. Importance of mental factors in sport? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AibWrCkYVk

  4. Mental Factors Look at the list below, which ones are mental factors?

  5. Mental Factors Look at the list below, which ones are mental factors?

  6. Definitions • Concentration: the ability to focus on the task in hand and focus for a period of time • Decision Making: The process of choosing a skill, action or option from a set of alternatives • Level of Arousal: Level of excitement, anticipation, stress prior to a performance. It relates to the preparation of a performance.

  7. “Concentration is the ability to focus on the task in hand and focus for a period of time”

  8. Concentration • Definition =the ability to focus on the task in hand and focus for a period of time • Example – if you are fully focussed you will: • 1. Be fully aware of environment and situation. • 2. Have improved skill level within game. • 3. Be able to make better decisions throughout performance.

  9. Concentration Negative Impact of poor concentration: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IG7q0gGMHek Positive Impact of good concentration: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8ZTYCbPYeQ

  10. Example - positive: Example of a positive impact on performance: • Factor: A mental factor which had a positive impact on my performance was concentration. • Context: In golf, concentration is required when playing a shot in order to focus only on the shot your about to play rather than anything else, such as the crowd, your opponent, your last shot etc. • Impact: This means that the player can focus on making good decisions and is more likely to play the ball accurately and produce a better score for the round.

  11. Example - negative: Example of a negative impact on performance: • Factor: A mental factor which had a negative impact on my performance was concentration. • Context: In badminton, during long rallies poor concentration led to poor decision making and poor shot selection.. • Impact: This meant that I made a lot of simple errors through lack of concentration and I was losing several points in the game, which caused me to fall further behind my opponent in the game.

  12. Your example: • Factor: • Context: • Impact

  13. Decision Making • Definition = The process of choosing a skill, action or option from a set of alternatives

  14. Decision Making • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge1RWoSQBvM Look at the speed of the decisions being made in this volleyball rally.

  15. Example - positive: Example of a positive impact on performance: • Factor: A mental factor which had a positive impact on my performance was decision making. • Context: In football, when attacking, I had the opportunity to shoot or to pass to my team mate. I noticed that my team mate was being marked, so I dribbled forward into the space and took a shot on goal. • Impact: This resulted in me scoring for my team and our team winning the game.

  16. Example – negative: Example of a negative impact on performance: • Factor: A mental factor which had a negative impact on my performance was decision making. • Context: In volleyball, the setter played the ball for me to attack. I was against a very tall blocker and tried to spike the ball, rather than tip it over the blocker. • Impact: This resulted in me playing the ball straight off the blocker and losing the point for my team.

  17. Your example: • Factor: • Context: • Impact

  18. Level of Arousal • Definition = Level of excitement, anticipation, stress prior to a performance. It relates to the preparation of a performance.

  19. Example – positive: Example of a negative impact on performance: • Factor: A mental factor which had a positive impact on my performance was level of arousal. • Context: In volleyball, if I have the optimal level of arousal I am more likely to be fully focused on the match and take risks to try and win points. • Impact: This means I will be able to play more creative attacks and be able to read cues from other players in the team to set up strong attacks and win points.

  20. Example – negative: Example of a negative impact on performance: • Factor: A mental factor which had a negative impact on my performance was level of arousal. • Context: If my level of arousal was too low in a game of basketball, I may be too relaxed before the performance. • Impact: This could result in me missing vital cues in the game and reacting too slowly when something happens. For example, if the guard called a play, I could miss this signal and run to the wrong place on court, confusing my team mates and stopping our attack.
